Diver Training

Some people approach
diving,in a easy going approach, and it is a great sport but it also has inherent risks accoicated with it, that is one reason I strongly advise the younger, newer, people who take up diving to the to join clubs as I do not think,(my personal
opinion ) that paying money and doing a course will make the person a
good diver,I started in 1968 and have logged sh--it loads around Aust
and O/Seas and I still learn. Ps I was a training officer and I did not
have one incident to any one I was involved with jersey

Too true!

Have dived with some novices in the past and have spent the whole dive looking after them. I suggest they joind a dive section and get the experience they need just in case they come unstuck. You never know until it happens to you! It all comes down to planning and never rush cause once your in the water you should be at ease and not chewing air!Laughing

Couldnt get a buddy a few weeks ago

Fri, 2009-12-11 21:25

so went to rotto on the lionfish with PDA, always a great comfortable day out on that boat but i was buddied up with an american tourist who said he was a "little rusty" and hadnt dived in a couple years...

no worries mate well take it slow i said, should have known dramas were ahead as he couldnt even set up his rental gear properly...

we enter the water and initially he had troubles, said he wasnt getting enough air from his reg, and his bc straps ere too tight ???

i suggested to him and the dive master he abandon the dive and ill tag along with another couple, but after a minute he tells me hes happy now and wants to continue...

we descend and are at about 22 metres, ive got 3 crays in the bag less than 20 minutes into the dive and am attacking another one when he taps me with his guages i look and see its reading 0 Bar....he has sucked through it in record time and i have to buddy breathe him all the way back to the boat.

After we surface and get on the boat hes not even embarrassed about himself and i ask him excactly how many years its been since he dived and he tells me oh actually its been about 10 ???

Anyway hes ok and now its a story to tell but i mean shit its a dangerous sport and should not be taken lightly.

Im actually part of a dive club also and there are advantages of joining one but theres pros and cons, its good for you to dive with experienced people but again if your not confident in yourself and your constantly slowing others down you may struggle to keep a buddy haha i think its all about doing sufficient training to be confident in yourself.

My Nightmare

Fri, 2009-12-11 21:42

Man, that is a nightmare. Did you buddy breath (1 reg) or did he take your occy? Buddy breathing from 22m is a fair effort, especially with someone who has just emptied a tank in 20 at 20m.

Well done for getting him back safely to the boat.

not a good thing to happen . i thought you would have had to do refresher courses on a regular basis. does your dive ticket expire after a while or do you keep it for life

Wish i could get a dive

Fri, 2009-12-11 22:30

Wish i could get a dive buddy to suck me dry.

Refresher courses are advised, dive tickets arent regulated though. Only time ive been asked to show mine was when i dived the wreck in dunsborough and i didnt even have it on me, give them a name and a birthdate and i was on my way. i know alot of guys who dive without having a ticket and i'd rather be in the water with them than some of my mates who are divemasters/rescue divers certified. all comes down to confidence and experience

Not in Kane's league of

Sat, 2009-12-12 07:22

Not in Kane's league of crazy, but I did have a friend's dad out on my boat but he aborted the dive, I think I even ended up with a few fill using his tank =)

On a PDA boat, my first +30m since getting my AOW, I got paired up with a random buddy from the pool. Vis was about +3m and the dive proceeded uneventfully enough and we each had plenty of air until we had to turn, then the guy was off like a rocket and my computer was bleeping at me to slow the ascent. I just hung onto his fins and waggled the comp at him till he read the ascent monitor.
