Dhuie heads

Just wondering if Dhuie heads are any good as craypot bait, I heard a story the day that the're no good as they are a cray predator not sure if this is a wives tale or not. Got a few stored in my freezer so would be a shame to waste them.

Cheers

Andy

Great bait Tiger. Old wives

Great bait Tiger. Old wives tale for sure. We use them with great results. Not as good as mackie heads and frames or tuna but still an effective bait. Macks and tuna are sooo much more oily. Herring is another good oily fish to use.

nothing wrong with

Nothing wrong with them at all, but yeah as mick said the oilier the better.

One thing have noticed over the years tho is if using whole shiny skippy for bait your prone to getting a lot more wobbygongs in your pots can always chop the skippy up a bit make them less visual for the wobbys.

Must be one of there favourite meals?

Hey Mick the boys in Kalbarri told me not to use mullet as its too oily and only catches wobbies. I tryed it and sure enough wobbie in both pots. So just wondering why other oily fish ie Tuna , Herring work so well.

The thing you need to watch

Wed, 2009-12-23 05:41

The thing you need to watch out for whith the heads ,is if it is a big head it can be eaten from the outside of pots, the best way to attach the head in the pot is with electrical wire through the eyes and fix it to the bottom of the pot ,if you hang the haed in the pot and there is a little swell the head will move in the current ,this will put the crays of ,we use to fix them in the bottom so they couldn't move right in the middle of the pot ,this way the crays couldn't getto them from the outside and have to get in the pot for a feed.

Yeah Tapout, heard that.

Yeah Tapout, heard that. Gave it a try though at the beginning of the season as we couldn't get any decent bait up here. Ended up with one in a pot. But that was for a weeks worth of crays and 4 pots. Had another in a pot coupla days ago and we were using orange ruffy and jack mackeral. I think its just luck of the draw. Pain in the ass to get the buggers out though. One of the few sharks that can bite their own tail.

Well this keeps getting more

Wed, 2009-12-23 12:26

Well this keeps getting more interesting, as one of the heads is from a 19kg speciman (not an italian astronaut) so will try to chop it in half. Now for the winds to drop.
