Deep and Meaningful - "The psychiatry of Fishing"

I was having a chat with a mate recently and we were talking about just what it is that drives us to spend countless hours and endure inhospitable conditions all in the search of some elusive fish. The topic was interesting in that we both had different drivers for why we do what we do. On reflection there are probably a million reasons why we brave the elements, get up at ungodly hours, punish our bodies jigging bohemouths from the depths, spend small fortunes on every bit of bling imaginable and live like recluses from our own families at times by spending countless hours on fishing forums and other sources of fishing fodder in order to satisfy our fishing addictions.

So what is it deep down that makes you do the things you do (fishing related)?

Is it the thrill of the chase, the solitude, the comradary of fishing with mates, the excitement of a strong fight or something completely different?

I love going out fishing as you just never know what the day is going to bring. Life is too predictable some times...being out on the sea isnt.

It's all about the water

Water has a very strong calming effect...on me anyway, so thats what it's all about for me, a day on the water is worth a week on land not fishing even if I'm not working, if I catch fish then it's even better but if I catch no fish I still go home at the end of the day a happy chappy.

I must admit that with freshwater fishing it was the thrill of the chase, getting some of the fresh water fish to bite was a real challenge, but with saltwater, I really don't know.

Anywhere as long as there is water, diving, boat fishing or kyaking fresh water for smaller fish...........doesn't matter and bluntly nor does actually catching fish, they are a bonus ..............and no damned blaring radios - just the lapping of water / birds / nature

men mucking about in boats!!

  • its the tackle, the bling factor
  • trying new things,
  • breaking sterotypes as in catching things with different methods
  • proving my father in law wrong by outfishing with lures verses bait.
  • fact that time when you are working or busy with life seems to be bit frantic, when you are up north or somewhere special out in the boat fishing time doesn't matter
  • those glassy days that you get every now and then that leave you speechless

etc

fishing sure beats working.

Any deeper than that is beyond my pea sized brains ability to compute.

for us it is a way to get away from every day life, when you own a business you need every break you can get.sitting out there on the water whether its 20nm out or just 5nm out it doesnt matter , neither does getting the fish , altho we would rather get at least a feed.quite often its just my wife and i that get out there and sometimes we hardly say anything all day but just being out there with her is a pleasure.peace and quiet is something we all need at times and out on the boat is one place you can get it
