Damage to skeg
Submitted by Tandawg on Fri, 2011-01-21 16:11
I have sustained a small chip about the size of a 10c piece at the front of my skeg.
Its going to be a claim through insurance so I need some advice on what to do.
1. Do I replace the whole bottom end of the gear box?
2. Can panel beaters apply some bog and then spray Yamaha grey on?
Obviously 1 is the more expensive option, but as insurance is involved - doesn`t really matter.
Insurance told me to get one quote but don`t know where to start my search.
Thank you
Chris

skeg
There is no way insurance will replace a gearbox for damage like that. probably would not even be worth claiming it on insurance. get a piece welded on and paint it.

Tig weld
If its only a small bit just get someone to tig weld it up, if they take it slow there will be no damage to the internals and seals

If you weld it dont forget to
If you weld it dont forget to remove the oil and plugs as if you get to much heat in the gearbox it can expand the air and blow out the seals. If you clean up the serface for welding youself remember to remove all the paint, and only clean the surface with a file, or something similer. NOT sand paper as it leaves a trace of the abrsive (silicon i think) which contaminates the weld and makes its pourus and not as strong.
I am so sick of catching wrasse!!!!!

you could
buy one of those skeg protectors that will cover the chip and protect your skeg
