Craypot Weights?

Hi everyone, I just purchased 2 Plastic Craypots today getting ready early for this season I'm glad I did I was'nt aware of all the work involved, puting 3 metal escape plates in each pot plus puting bait holders together and install them. What I want to know is what do you guys use for weights and where do you secure them in your pots. I'm looking for cheap methods as I dont want to buy lead weights as I believe there expensive, what are you guys using?

Cheers Kev

old railway sleeper plates.....

usually. They are the plate that sits on the sleeper to which the rail is attached - they weigh about 5kg. But really anything kinda flat and heavy will do the job.

Secure them to the base using cable ties or something similar.

Thats what we use, quite affective, if you are in Leeman we have to put bolts in ours as apparently seal pups where getting in and drowning, so these bolts (just look like big bolt) stick up and stops the seal pups entering, we got our from Fisheries.  All we have ever had was a wobbie gong and he was still alive.

Dumbells/Barbells

I've seen dumbell/barbell weights used as well, if you or someone you know has some old gym equipment they're not using. Plus, the poachers will only pull your pot once 'cause they'll think they're dealing with a buff dude or something.

Thanks for your input fellas I went down to the local scrap metal yard and they had some worn cutting edges off a Grader. One of the guys gas axed me 4 pieces, which fit neatly on the bases of my 2 pots.

Craypots

So far the pots have cost me close to $100 each plus time and frustration fitting the escape plates and weights. I have rope which I aquired so thats a bonus, if the pots went missing I doubt that I would replace them so fingers crossed.
