cray thief caught!

Heard on 882 with karl langdon this morning, a guy from fisheries that apprehended just this morning, a 56 year old bloke, and his 53 year old wife, with 81 cray tails in their possesion, at one of the northern marinas this morning.

He said as well as a $20k fine they were now facing, they would also be charged with obstruction, as they were trying to tip the cray tails back into the water when fisheries boarded their boat. He also mentioned a few other avenues they could persue to increase the fines, and also that they were definately heading to court with some "seriously life changing fines".

Good to hear!!! Looking forward to reading the full statement when all the other details are released.

Sounds like they have every intention of doing just that unc!!

The fisheries bloke mentioned that this is the kind of thing theyve been targeting lately, and people have to stop with the "gold rush mentality" when it comes to crays at this time of year.

Karl mentioned that, and fisheries bloke said it is a possibility, but apparantly that is generally reserved for illegal sale of seafood offenders.

Was interesting to hear it at the start of his show at 5am. They mustve got them nice and early. He also mentioned they were enroute to their residence to check for further limit breaches! Wonder if theres more tails hiding in their freezer....

Sat, 2015-11-28 08:03

Good job fisheries. Coming into OR from first pull of the season this morning there were quite a few carapace's floating in the marina not a good look. As a side dropped 4 pots yesterday, got to the first mark this morning and no pot. I had dropped them in a fairly tight grouping same conditions, same weight, same pots and one had disappeared???

What location?  I found a pot with no floats (again) yesterday.  Tied my life jacket to it and reported to fisheries.  Was gone this morning, so i am hoping fisheries recovered it with my extra rope and life jacket.

Hey!!!

Sat, 2015-11-28 13:14

he reckons the old guy was trying to throw them overboard   56 isn't old!!  But he is still an arsehole, throw the book at them, greedy f**cks. Don't worry about the "old enough to know better, should have better morals"etc--once a pirate, always a pirate, I've known plenty of old bastards who couldn't break the habits of a lifetime--live for it, in fact.

I was direct witness to a fisheries sting once with a well-known pro fisherman up here with a big boat. It was to do with the 4.30 limit on pulling, which frankly was a PITA for us pros, because sometimes you have to move a long way in a day, and earlier you start the better. Anyway, I went out at 04.10, intending to idle down to jakes and commence at 04.30, and saw the lights of a working boat just north. He's game,  I thought, and kept idling south. I just happened to have the VHF on Ch 16, because we had just got back from Port Gregory where we used it for the morning weather sched. F* all use at Kalbarri, so it was normally left off. I hear the patrol vessel identify itself, and call the boat by name. They were sitting out there dark, and watching.Turn around, and there is a light boring in, simultaneously all the lights on the target go off. Pissed ourselves. Turns out he saw them coming after they lit up, turned off all the lights and opened her up, crew were throwing off the 20 - odd pots and catch at 20 knots in the dark. Stopped when it was done, and then had to explain why they had weed and old bait all over the deck

They busted a few up this way for that--they weren't pulling others pots, just their own, for the reason I gave. The whole rule was bought in originally, I was told, due to pressure from the recco sector about other reccos pulling their pots.

yes, things have progressed

Sat, 2015-11-28 19:51

Now rather than light them up with white light, they light them with infra red light and video the whole lot without them knowing :)  yes, If they had waited for another minute or so before turning the lights on, they would have had him :-) probably something to do with the legalities of charging around the ocean with no nav lights on , vs just sitting there

Seriously though, what are you going to do with 81 crays. Probably giving them to friends to look good and going to get shtung for it    Some people can't help themselves, the take-all attitude, I call it, they just have to kill them if they can.. They should consider themselves luicky if Fisheries don't go for the commercial angle, fines and penalties rise considerably if they can prove you have been selling, and rightly so.

I have another story about lights at sea I can still alugh about. Back in 75, I was woring out of prt Licoln. We were surface trawling garfish at night with nets and booms set up each side of a 20 ft Star Boat --you picked up the school with spotties then ran through them. We did this for a while, pioneered it, then the fisheries decided we were catching whiting and banned it inside of 20 fathoms--load of crap, only bycatch was the odd squid. Anyway, we had another guy doing it, off a 23ft sharkcat, a competitor but on friendly terms. We decided to sneak out one night and do it anyway on the first beach north of Port Liccoln bay, where we thought we wouldn't be seen. Run out there dark, round the point, and therte is our competitor doing what we had intended to do So we snuck in on him, dark, then lit him up from 100 metres away. Didn't he go!!!  Lights off and full bore north. waited until he was out of sight around the corner then cleaned up the gar that were left. But the funniest part was meeting him at the ramp a few days later, keeping a straight face all the time as he regaled us with a tale of how the fisheries had chased him all the way up to Cowell before he outran them. And had to get on a public phone ( remember them?) to ring his wife and get her to tow the trailer up there in the middle of the night to recover the boat.

Two completely different areas of fish management. Research vs Compliance.  The research people will still be working hard to establish the reason for the dead fish and the compliance guys are working hard to protect our fish stocks and yours and mine catches.

Good job by both i reckon.

Worrying that the cause for the deaths still not found

Sun, 2015-11-29 02:49

It is quite concerning that the cause of the fish deaths is proving to be elusive. Lets hope that the cause can be positively identified because if it's not, how are you/we going to see that measures are put in place to do all that can be done to prevent it happening again.

The all clear has been given for water activities to resume in the sound with the caveat that you don't swim near dead fish or smelly and discoloured water.

Apparently there is birds

Tue, 2015-12-01 10:20

Apparently there is birds killed as well, so it has to be poison in the water in Cockburn sound.

Stinks like a cover up. I heard there is going to be some independent lab tests done by someone to ensure the government isn't lying. The person reckons the fisheries are lying.

Fisheries are onto it!

Had our pots cleaned out a number of times so far this season, you have to check every day and hope for the best. Fisheries appear to be doing a really good job and there are pot raiders out there under surveillance that don't even know it yet! Harsher penalties and lose their boat .... as for pot raiding divers .... another balll game unfortunately .... maybe a nice big noah to give them a scare!

Thats commercial poaching, not a mistake or a minor crime. 80 crays should be a life time fishing licence ban
