Commercial Licenses

This has been bandied about with a few people since the announcement of the Demersal/Boat fishing licenses and was curious about others thoughts.

According to the Regulations:-

"The holder of a Commercial Fishing license must not hold a Recreational Fishing License relatiing to rock lobster, abalone or net fishing (See regulations 123 and 124)."

Taken from here http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/pub/Licencing/c-1_application.pdf

Now that there is going to be a recreational boat fishing license could it/ would it or should it be added to the list of Recreational licenses that commercials cant hold remembering that Commercial Fishing licenses are "required by persons who engage in commercial fishing (such as Masters and crew of licensed fishing boats).

This is definately not a pro bash topic as we have quite a few members here who fit in the crew category. Please keep it civil.

Interesting...

First thought would be no,they wouldn't be able to hold a rec fishing license.

Are the crew,eg: Deckhands who work on a Pro boat classed as commmercial fisherman ? or is it just the licence holder........

Think so Rick if they are on a licensed boat.

Licences

Sat, 2009-09-19 17:43

It doesn't matter if you are the skipper or crew,if you hold a professional licence you are only allowed to have a freshwater or marron licence.
That is why a lot of the decky's missus' and kids hold cray licences,he takes them out to help pull their pots for a feed otherwise he will have to buy them

curious, with these new licences coming in to force , do the pro licenced wetliners need to have a new licence to go out on their own boat and catch demersals or does their pro licence cover it

As far as I know the skippers and deckhand are not permitted to have a rec licence,I know some of the ex cray guys lease there pots out each year then go and get a rec licence so they can pull 4 pots each day ,,as far as i know this is not aloud ,but they do it .

If the pot owners are not actually "fishing" as Paul says they don't need a pro licence once they have leased their pots and its perfectly legal for them to get an amatuer licence to get crays.I suppose its Kenny Mc and Andy A he's from Two Rocks he's talking about

I heard someone who holds a commercial skippers ticket cannot hold an RST, so this may be similiar with fishing licenses.

One of my clients (who is a pro cray skipper) took a dinghy out from lancelin for a surf and got busted for no valid ticket.

Beauracracy gone mad if it is true.

I would have thought his Master Class 5 would be considered a higher qualification than a Rec Skippers Ticket? regardless of the boat he was skippering. That would be like telling me I can't drive my car on a MC truck license and I can only drive a truck.

very curious on this one as well, seems to be a mixed idea about it.

Maybe someone like Ryan or Allrounder might be able to shed some light on this, as they have friends and family in the business.

and others like d doush who do deckie work etc,

Rick deckhands are classed

Sun, 2009-09-20 14:41

Rick deckhands are classed as commercial fishers and need to have a commercial liscense.

Fisheries are hopeless, when i first got my commercial cray license i had to sighn a form which cancelled all my recreational licenses. However when i rang and then spoke to 10 different people about having a freshwater license they could not give me an exact answer. So i just got one anyway and havnt had a problem. However a rec cray license is illegal
As far as im aware with the RST and master 5, they are allowed to have both. And need to have a RST if they are skippering a rec vessel. Which is absolutly ridiculous.

When the RST came in I had to send details of my master class 5 into Dot as it was then to receive my RST.D Doush is spot on,you need a RST to skipper a rec boat regardless of your commercial qualifications

With a little practice the bigger boats are easier to drive than ones with outboards and sterndrives

When I got my master 5 they just give you a RST as well, you just need to tell them you want it and it gets sent to you.
As far as I'm concerned you're better losing your RST if there's an accident than losing your M5 if you were using it to cover a rec boating day.
