Cockburn Locals

Hi Guys, looking for an opinion from some Cockburn Sound regulars on whether you reckon the Sound will be fishable on Saturday keeping in mind the fairly strong southerlies forecast. I am keen to fish the area but it is a long trip down there from home

Cheers Steve

p.s. I am more interested in boat fishing rather than land based

Sound!

At this stage it looks like Sunday is the better option. Sat looks very windy and the water will be messy. You can always stay at the Southern/bottom end of the Sound and you'll be a bit more protected.

You can get herring & garfish over the weed area with a chance of KG near the sand holes. Squiding would be an option also with a drift anchor if the wind was a bit much. The rockwall to Garden island offers wind protection to a degree but as mentioned a  long trip so weigh it up!

Thanks Ryan, I will keep an eye on it and take it from there. Sunday is looking OK however I have my brother in law coming down from the bush Saturday and he is keen for a fish. The Ocean is a write off, yesterday Windfinder was forecasting 9m+ swells for Saturday.

Where would be the best place to launch to fish the bottom of the sound?

if your boats not too huge

if your boats not too huge try the small boat ramps along the rockingham foreshore, theres 2, one main one with a jetty and another with none, that would be your best bet or point peron boat ramp, but that might be a little messier if you have a smaller boat going out and under the coathanger bridge.

I'd!

With your size boat i'd launch from the Peron Boat ramp (wash down facility also/take your own hose i think)

Drive north to the Garden Island causeway and then head back down along the rock groyne or to where ever. The weed & sand patches to the South of the mussle farm produces KG/herring/garfish/squid!

All the best!

Thanks Gents, I reckon I will give it a bash from Pt Peron and report on the results.

I am looking forward to the squidding. Got a few off Mindarie on Sunday but they were pretty hard work

Saturday V's Sunday

Yeh Sundays forecast light - moderate easterly is good....alot better than Saturdays forecast!

I'll be either squiding in the Sound or going for a bottom fish Sunday if it stays the same!

Think I might be out there

Think I might be out there for a squid as well....if you do launch from Pt Peron take a hose/muffs. Sometimes the hoses are there, sometimes they're not. It's one of the best ramps I've seen, actually. Plenty deep enough for any boat, heaps of car/trailer parking, miles of jetty space, reasonably well lit up, a nice fish cleaning bench, and it's FREE. Absolutely craps on any of the Mandurah ramps, which either charge you through the nose or provide you with no facilities, or BOTH.
