Cleaning mussels

I am interested to hear peoples methods of cleaning mussels prior to cooking. I normally scrape them with a chisel to get all the crap off but it takes a long time. There must be a better way to do it. Some homemade inventions even?

Is with a large horizontal perforated drum that spins I think with a water sluice to remove debris you can see at least one down in rockingham at mooring near the causeway.  You could try to find a front loader washing machine on a verge collection and see what is required to get it up and running.  I think also at $3-4 a kilo cleaned not many have gone macguyver on it.

When we do dive for mussels we generally just give em a quick hit with a clean steel wire brush while holding with a glove and straight onto the barbie plate with a squirt of chilli sauce when they open.

If im cooking chilli mussels or a 'mussles in sauce/soup' recipe then I just buy them and beard them.

Use a cement mixer. works a treat. or put them in a sack, run the garden hose in the sack and rub/roll in on the grass.
