Cheeky Tranny - loses bottom and wont re-find it

Howdy Folks,

My boat has a damn fancy Lowrance plotter/fish finder paired up with an Airmar transducer. A damn big brick of a thing that hangs off the back of the boat.

It is a great unit and I can see the bottom in 250m so I am happy with that....but occasionally when I find a spot and back the boat up to stop momentum, it will lose bottom. Its all good and tolerable normally, but it is prooving to be a pain in the arse when we go further out...

Like when we were out in 200m of water, I reversed up just to stop momentum and it dropped bottom, so we were without any soundings for the next hours until we were back in under 30m of water.

I have turned it off and on again and it didnt re-find itself. Tirned the power off on the switch and it didnt re-find itself and have turned the batteries on and off again and it didnt sort it.

Is there a trick to re-setting it?

I know that i can just stop reversing but is there a re-set function?

When it happens try changing depth manually to suit the depth your in, but let the prop turbulence from going backwards settle first

Seems to be a feature with the auto ranging for the Lowrance family of sounders.  Once they lose bottom it struggles to re calibrate and start again.   As Jim says try switiching to manual depth range.

Also avoid reverse :)  Do a lap instead.

I've found the Navico support guys here in Aus to be very helpful/knowledgeable about a couple of different matters. Could be worth a call if you get no joy.

Sounder model,Transducer?
You could scroll back on the sounder and mark the spot and circle around Slowly.
Bottom lock setting on sounder, range setting to 10 or 20 mts.
couple to try if not already.

Have you checked that the unit is still airtight.  On reverse you might be putting air bubbles in it . No expert but possible
