Catfish jugglin'
Submitted by 7739ian on Wed, 2008-09-10 07:53
My daughter rang from New York on Sunday to wish me a happy Fathers Day. She had spent the previous week in Illinois with her partner who took her to meet some old friends somewhere in the sticks - and she meant Banjo twanging sticks. The friends father took them Catfish Jugglin' - ie you wade around, find a catfish nest on the river bottom and stir it up until the male catfish swallows your arm, allowing you to drag it out of the water for later consumption. This was the highlight of her trip other than watching them shoot raccoons. When she comes home in a year or two she wants to live in Wiluna as she says it will run this place a close second.

Interesting way of fishing, but then the yanks can be 'inventive'
Sounds like you're daughter's getting wristless - still, no arm in trying!

I have seen that on Foxtel
The guy who was doing the show was calling it catfish nurdling or something like that. Pretty crazy as snakes also lived in the caves ad logs they were pulling the catfish out of.

Snakes, alligators, snapping turtles, infected fingers, drowing with a fish attached to your arm? No thanks.

catfish noodling
http://www.fishwrecked.com/node/8466 - crazy stuff
but where I am, in Sopchoppy Florida they do 'worm gruntin' - which is rubbing a long piece of steel over a wooden peg stuck in the ground, causing vibrations which for whatever reason brings giant worms to the surface where they are gathered up and used for fish bait to catch the catfish.

serious banjo twanging here
edit -seems that fishwrecked node doesn't open but type 'noodling' in search and a pic comes up from Rodrat which gives a good indication of the size of the catfish.

I'm from the US and it's
I'm from the US and it's typically called noodling. I've done it, it's pretty good fun! If you catch a big one they can pretty near rip your arm out of socket!! The catfish don't have teeth, but do have a sandpaper mouth, they can rub you raw in a hurry. There are about a hundred different ways to catch catfish in America.
One of my favorites is jug fishing. Basically, get about 10 milk jugs and tie a line to each. Bait the hooks, weight them, and spread them out in a secluded cove. When a catfish takes a bait, the jug starts moving, if it's a big one it goes under, but they can't keep it under for long. paddle over to the jug and pull up your catfish! Sometimes you get four or five jugs going at once, which can be interesting!
ah man...this thread makes me homesick! But I love the fishing here too!!
Bod, fiddling for worms is one of the weirder things you can do in life....it is surreal to see these worms coming up out of the ground. I've never heard of it being called 'gruntin'.

Tickle me pink
catfish are for cats! No way I am practicing artificial insemination. I can go along with tickling Trout. That's about as far as my fetishes go
