Calling all Docker knockers!

I want to see who is willing  to commit to this now...

If the Dockers beat North Melbourne at Etihad on Sunday, who out there in "docker knocker land" will acknowledge some respect for the Dockers and say this year we are the real deal, a competitive team and a chance of getting past week one of the finals.  North are one of the form sides right at this minute, and any team who can beat them can consider themselves a very capable unit.

For my end, if we lose, I'll say we're not good enough and shouldn't play finals this year and we should start planning for next year.  If we can't beat a top eight team in Melbourne then we won't get far into September.

It's elimination final time for us from here on in!

thought most here knew that.

Unfortunatly the Dockers play with good intentions but unless Pavlich has a blinder (of whom I am a fan) they will go nowhere come finals time.

Assuming they make it.

ps. Not yet Tim-o but we're on our way. Be very interesting come Prelims.

Mon, 2012-08-20 20:15

Hey, i say the hawks are real contenders.  they competition is sydney and adelaide (even with their little hiccup), i think their top two finishes will help them..  i rate hawks above the colliewobbles and wet toasters.  geelong are dangerous, i just wonder how their old legs are holding up.  north are really the unknown factor to me and this week will go a long way to answering that.  freo have been good at etihad under lyon. he knows the ground.  if north blow us away, look out everyone else...

I think we will shut them

Mon, 2012-08-20 20:27

I think we will shut them down defensively, both in the back six and the midfield.  McPharlin has hardly been beaten this year (bar Buddy in Tasmania when our midfield failed badly) and he will account for petrie if the midfield curb the supply.  mundy is finding the ball, fyfe will be beater for a couple of runs.  defend defend defend and then score when the opportunity presents.  before saturday richmond had only been beaten by more than 21 points twice this year, in rounds 1 and 2.  we got up by 22 on saturday...

 Hardly reckon Nth Melbourne

Mon, 2012-08-20 20:36

Hardly reckon Nth Melbourne is a benchmark for 'real deal'.. win or lose... the club has no culture.. its website brags about its first GF wins as back in the pre south freo format... um... They wont be the real deall til theyre battling against GWS in the GF!!!(Sheeds and Roos will make that happen in the next 5-6yrs I reckon) They won their GF a few weeks back!!! Until they actually hang on to a quality coach and give the gimp a chance, they wont get anywhere!!!

Only room enough in this state for one team... Carn Eagles!!!

I'll cop that

Mon, 2012-08-20 20:53

If the Shockers do beat the Roos - then I'd agree they could be a surprise packet come finals time. They do have a game plan that will stack up nicely against the Roo's possession game, if they can play to it for four quarters and restrict the Roo's scoring. If the Kanga's kick 12-14+ goals, they'll win the match.

As for finals....hard to see anyone knocking off the Hawks this year. Adelaide are pretenders....they may even go out in straight sets.

Being a coasters fan...if Essendon to upset Collingwood in R23 and assuming we lose to the Hawks, we would then play them again the following week in Melbourne. Then a home final versus the winner of Roos v Freo, with the winner going to Sydney.

If Collingwood beat Essendon, Eagles MUST beat the Hawks - which would see us going to Sydney before getting a home final between the winner of Pies V Freo.

If the Eagles lose to the Hawks in R23 and Collingwood win in R23....it's a Derby final. If results go the other way and Eagles travel to Sydney in Week 1 and lose, if Freo win v Collingwood/Roos - it a Derby elimination in Week 2!

Mon, 2012-08-20 21:26

gold coast and GWS also have alot more concessions/special treatment than the dockers ever had, and better coaches to start off with too. wasn't until Harvey came along that they actually invested in a team of almost entirely fresh recruits and started the long road to building them into a real side. Lyons has come along at a convenient stage and might get them up there in the next 2 years or so, dont think this year is the one tho.

Would be nice to have less injuries too

let me run off a few names

fyfe 20 yrs

hill 22 yrs

ballaz 25 yrs

barlow 25 yrs

broughton 24 yrs

crozier 19 yrs

de boer 22 yrs

ibbitson 24 yrs

mayne 24 yrs

mellington 20 yrs

morabito 20 yrs

neale 19 yrs

pearce 22 yrs

walters 21 yrs

ten of these are in our starting 22, 2 are injuried (brougton and morabito), the others have games under their belt and shown potential.  most have another ten years in front of them.  yes we need to think about some key position players to replace pav and mcpharlin.  i think silvani and faulks will will have long term futures at the club, the challenge is a quality young power forward.

i think the critics are a bit harsh on zac.  he does turn it over sometimes, but count how many times he doesn't get to a contest and effect a spoil.  even mcpharlin said that if the opposition midfield deliver the ball out in front there is little he can do.  when dawson is in the contest, and the ball isn't half a metre in front of the forward, he effects a spoil much more often than not.  a bit like fletcher i reckon, he's got a knack of just reaching in, in time.

Have to love the dilusional

Mon, 2012-08-20 22:07

Have to love the dilusional dockers supporters.

Start of every year it is "w000 this is our year we are the best"

Mid through every year it is "w0000 we are awesome we can get into 8th position"

End of the year "we are the real deal.....rant rant rant"

Start of the finals.....wait there is nothing to basethis on as it has only happened 3 times...

Reality check....the dockers are without a doubt one of the 2 least succesful teams in the history of the AFL/VFL (possibly professional sport all together). One could go as far as to say infact they are the least successful. How many finals have they EVER won? ah 2.....yeh awesome 2 from 18 seasons... Won 157 games...Lost 224 Conrgats.

Rest my case...

Remind me what the dockers coach claimed in 06, about if they won they would have won the premiership...

think thats how its spelled. and sea-kem, kane... geez i'm envious of your decision to back a team that has won a premiership. how do you do it? You must be really awesome and know lots of stuff and can probably piss further than me.

Is the trick just to pick a good side, or do most people support a side that they feel they have some kind of connection to, e.g geographically? Is it considered 'un-loyal' to switch to another side if you feel like they got a better chance of winning? i am young grasshopper, please to be learning me the ways of the footy.

Mon, 2012-08-20 22:36

Its super easy, just go for any team in the AFL except the dockers, GWS and GCS :-)

I understand you must be upset, i would be too if I made the decision to go for Freo, youd be like aaagh shit i really made a poor decision there...but I cant really change teams now... maybe Ill just get defensive at anyone who says my team is shit... even if they are right...

good brain.

if you bothered to read my first post you may have read "...started the long road to building them into a real side." which implies I have not considered them a real side at any point so far.

then also "might get them up there in the next 2 years or so, dont think this year is the one tho." next comment?

having to repeat yourself implies a few things about your audience, nothing positive.

You people are blind to the changes at Freo.  our derbies are no longer the most important games of the year.  It's just in the last derby the wet toasters made us look really good because they were so damn useless.  you guys reckon freo rely too much on the Pav, well here's a statement about the eagles - NO GLASS = NO EAGLES.  you're skipper was missing and you boys got caned, like you had against adelaide and sydney.  You're secretly all very very afaid now that we have the most successful win / loss ratio coach with more than two years experience.

Dockers record tells the tale

Tue, 2012-08-21 07:53

Like a Yo-Yo no consistence to their seasons. Their playing squad does have a number of good to top line players, whether they win or lose against NM they need to be competitive, Playing in the finals is a whole new ball game be interesting to see if the list of young players can step up to the mark. It's only since Pav's been bagging a good number of goals each week that the Dockers have been winning. Good luck to ya team but for me it's not their year.

In saying all that it'll be one of the top 4 teams that take the cup home, Bit hard to pick at the moment. Can't see one of the second 4 getting up haven't played consistantly enough even though NM have got 5 on the trot.

WCE Vs Pies will be a cracker For me Coaster's up in a close one if we can stop their mid field.

only 2 wins behind

Tue, 2012-08-21 15:52

The eagles are only two wins ahead of the dockers. They got there by flogging all the crap teams at the start and when they are playing decent teams they get flogged. yet they say that dockers are crap. So depending on the next two games...the eagles may be as crap as the dockers.

i don't see any wce

Tue, 2012-08-21 19:10

i don't see any wce supporters coming on here saying their team has had an inconsistent year.  its all 'we have three premierships', 'the dockers will never succeed', 'the dockers play their gf on derby day'....

and i am just sick of that, i look towards the future and like what i see.  i look at the present and like what i see.  we need to improve to win a premiership.  i reckon that in 2014 we'll be a very serious threat, top two finish and gf.  what i see right now is a side about to take on a real form team at the moment and i see ways that we will beat them this week.

and i hope that will make a few people stand back and say, hmmmmm

freo's season to date, 12w, 8l

biggest wins 95 points gws, wce 65

biggest losses 56 points hawthorn,  wce 48

take those four results out, and our average winning marging is 23.6 pts in the other 10 wins, average losing margin 21.8 pts in the other six losses.  would ike to see that second figure decrease a bit.

can you do the same?  see how it compares.

Hey Randall take a chill pill pal. There's mud slinging on all sides of the fence mate. I think you're taking it all a little too seriously, maybe you should take the boat out and have a nice relaxing fish ;)

hey, a lot of what i say is

Tue, 2012-08-21 20:05

hey, a lot of what i say is in jest, i take as good as i get.  if you had supported the dockers for 18 years without success, you'd understand!  i pity the clubs like bulldogs and st kilda, how long is it for them?

and your advice is good!  planning a jaunt out of two rocks on saturday, catch some fish i hope, and then watch the footy on sunday, sorry watch the dockers WIN the footy on sunday!

all good fun and a bit of debate.

not sure where you got those

Wed, 2012-08-22 09:02

not sure where you got those stats from randall, but wce biggest win was by 108 in round 3.

I do wish freo all the best for the season but in all honesty if you dont win this week your chances of playing finals is out of your control. if carlton beat the saints in the last round they will finish 8th and freo 9th.

ouch 9th second worst position to finish. but atleast you beat us. once this year.

good luck.

the stats i quoted were freo's and not wet toasters,  i would like to see a wce supporter run the same and compare the results.  i have no idea which one would be better.  you're right thou, all freo can do to ensure themselves a final spot is to keep winning and keep their destiny in their hands, no-one elses.  i hope we don't rely on other results to make the finals, because i think that of all the teams competing for that last spot, all are very capable of making it their own.  i hope that it is freo that make it their own this year and show the supporters that this team means business

i look to the next ten years and see MY club playing finals frequently and regularly.  that is the freo of the future.  that is why i support my club and i am sure the same applies to every other supporter in the afl.... if we only supported the most successful clubs it would make for a very boring discussion!

The problem

Wed, 2012-08-22 20:52

I see with Freo's current squad and recruiting is their lack of key position players.

When Pav, McPharlin, Grover, McPhee, Sandilands retire (within next 4-5 yrs) there wont be much left.

40 midfielders can only do so much.

You're being very generous

Thu, 2012-08-23 07:21

You're being very generous Matt. I'd give that bunch of players 2/3 years max. McPhee is on his last legs now, you'd get another good year out of grover and McPharlin, Sandilands you'd be lucky to get another 2 out of. The toe is bringing the bigman down. And Pav, well he is champion they may drag his career out but his body is showing signs of a hard AFL life. He's prob got 3 left in him at the most.

Fremantle will beat NM

Tue, 2012-08-21 21:02

because there thight arse defence will stuff up NM's forward structure.

Freo love beating possession teams like WC and NM

Its all about shutting them down and with genuine pressure.

Next thing you know there game plan is out the window.

Yeah Paully Ross's eyes were moving back and forth at a great rate.. dunno what that tells ya.

Wed, 2012-08-22 21:52

To Sunday, I'm hoping for a big win and to see them give a final or two a crack!! I like the difference Ross is bringing.

Much improved season, it's been hard following them at times since starting but ha I was knocking around freo as a young scrubber so that's my team. Never had time for AFL before that, not sure why!!

Ha ha ha much improved season? Seems to be the same as last year and the year before that etc etc  when they start to make say the top 6 for a couple of consistent years then you could say they've improved. But when they're battling to make the top 8 c'mon man.

 Same kinda season as they

Thu, 2012-08-23 19:51

Same kinda season as they sacked Harvey for!!! Lowlife admins screwed him out of it, just like Lyons did to the Saints at the same time!!! lacking respect that club is... and it shows, season after season!! I hate the fact that I hate a WA team more than collingwood.. but they havent ever earnt any respect.. even their own fanbase booed the new coach!! UM.. that aint right... its ok.. give em a few yrs and theyll absorb Pt adeliade with em and get rid of that bye round!!
