just wondering what people have found to be the best burley for snapper and how much or what rate to set up a good burley trail. I have tried a mixture of mulie, chook pellets, oil, fish bits etc but cant seem to bring around snapper, only spastic wrasse and shit reef fish.Help.

if it's shallow (ie under 15m) I just use a 2kg block of mulies. This normally lasts a few hours. Just cut each mulie into about 10 pieces and chuck a few cubes in just up current every few minutes. Watch the first few sink down and you'll get a feel for where you think they are landing on the bottom. Then float back a unweighted mulie and wait.
This has worked well for us lately on dhuies, snapper and sambos.
If the water is to deep for this, grab a burley log and a burley bucket with a sinker in it and lower this to the bottom under the boat. Otherwise tie a burley bag off to your anchor rope a few metres up from the anchor when you set it (only do this if you know the boat is going to hang with the current and not the wind or you will be fishing out of your burley trail).
When I snapper fished a lot I'd keep a "ongoing" burley cage in my freezer (within a 20L bucket so it didn't leak) and chuck all crab, cray, prawn and fish scraps in. You can add some pellets too and when I wanted to fish just pull it out and use, then refreeze when done. Chuck a brick in at the start for weight and it's a easy, clean burley.

Best system we have found yet is RJAYZ
This is the best system we have found yet that gives you everything you need for any situation(anchoring, drifting, deep, shallow, high tidal flow or very little). You can really controll the berley flow in these which I like cause it means you attract the fish and not just feed them.
http://www.rjayz.com.au/ You can check out the setup and there is a animated video as well. You can find em in most tackle shops arround town from what I have seen. They actually work, although our old yellow berley bucket slid down the anchor rope was not to bad, just nowhere near as effective as this setup. HTH.

So Tim,
I'm guessing you're either single or filthy rich and hung like Phar Lap.
Jeez my missus whinges when I've a block of mulies in the freezer let alone a 20lt bucket of constantly recycled burley.

wrong on all accounts Smicko. You missed a few key words:
"WHEN I snapper fished a lot I'd keep a "ongoing" burley cage in MY freezer (within a 20L bucket so it didn't leak) and...."

Freezer
Check out the garage sales and ads in the local paper for a cheap chest freezer so you will have your own one then the missus can't complain.

keep your eyes on the quokka
keep your eyes on the quokka and you'll find chesties around 100 dollar mark. I also use any old bait as burley, just mince it in your hands or on a bait board and throw in your burley bucket or in the water and wait
People who haven't caught a big fish just don't get it

is it possible you are sat on top of the reef instead of next to it??

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.
