Bunbury Landbased Fishing / Wind, wave advice

G'day FW, I am new to fishing and have found some great advice in these forums.
I took my kids fishing at Buffalo beach a couple of days ago, and couldnt cast past the breaking waves. Does anyone have any advice regarding the recommended wave and sea height, and when you should just give it a miss and try the river instead.

A longer rod between 10-12
A longer rod between 10-12 foot will keep your line above the breakers and help you get that little bit of extra distance in your cast. But some of the best spots can be quite close to shore
Never tried the river but good luck with the fishing :)
