I like the 3 way cranes as recommended by Ryan. Pretty sure feral1975 is talking about the same ones (http://www.river2sea.com.au/categories.asp?cID=45). I still get tangles, but they are a lot easier to get out than the crosslines or knots.

In my limited experience, I've tried a couple of methods/swivel types/brands. I've tried knots before, but I find they tangle easily and if your baits not on straight they can twist your line up wrecking the line/rig (more on descent and retreival i think). Very annoying to untwist when it happens as well. Good for keeping the line 90 degrees from the main line, but only if your bait doesnt twist I guess?

Strength for both would depend on what knots you use. If you get really good with knots you can tie them 90% using correct knot and knot-tying skill, then if your rig gets stuck, you can break the rig instead of your main line.

personal preference!

Its a personal preference Marc. For me I like using the Shogun & Gladiator H/D three way swivels (both good) for deep water Rubys/greybandedcod/leatherjackets etc as i can replace a dropper through a bite off etc. If i want to use a snelled dropper rig i use three ways also. I find threeways tangle more with other lines and takes longer to make up also. As for fishing 20-120m i use dropped loops and use 120lb trace line!

up it!

Thu, 2008-08-21 12:55

Agree, up the trace Marc as I've lost a few fish on 80lb especially if you get a double header and the fish do a scissor snap also!

All the best, the weather's looking good this w/end

I use 50lb braid down to

Thu, 2008-08-21 13:11

I use 50lb braid down to 150lb leader then make all my bottoms up with 150lb mono and cranes , but thats my personel preferance as ryan says with 80lb dosen't take much with a good double header of even good snapper to be pulling in different directions for a bottom to come apart

mono knots

Thu, 2008-08-21 13:52

What type of knots are you using for the heavy trace?
I am doing mainly blood knots on the 80lb and it isnt easy
tying knots with thick mono.

Uni!

Thu, 2008-08-21 16:12

Yes the uni is a quick & strong knot for sure Marc and my fav. I tie knots in mono to 120lb and crimp anything heavier for ease but still doable!

tuna hitch

Thu, 2008-08-21 17:34

The tuna hitch is an awsome knot, I use it for everything!

You should be able to find it on google or something, give it a go and learn it and you might like it. Make sure you spit on your knots before you tighten them aswell, I know I'm stating the obvious but i rekon it makes a big diff (not just in how the knot pulls together but strengh aswell).

i use 110lb schneider line

Thu, 2008-08-21 18:29

i use 110lb schneider line in the multi color, a top line for dhuie rigs and not bad priced too, seems a fairly poplular choice

why i go heavy!

Thu, 2008-08-21 18:45

If a dhu doesn't swallow in the hook/trace line then lighter trace lines are fine. If they do swallow the hook/trace then that changes things. A long fight or the fish goes off with guns blazing then yes they can wear through. Having experienced this myself and when i was a decky so thats why i prefer heavy trace. I recently lost two very big pink snapper estimated 7-10kg when they 'scissor snapped' my trace line on my 80lb bottom gear so thats another reason as already mentioned!

I like to be the one to release the fish, not the other way around so yeh i'll stay with the heavy stuff!

full circle!

Fri, 2008-08-22 12:04

I've tried the lot and ironically I've done a full circle and gone back to my fav Mustad Big Red 6/0, not the sharpest on the market when compared but strong & reliable. Baldys/pinks no worries and the bigger KG wooff it!

always use 3 single 7/0-9/0

Thu, 2008-08-21 20:36

always use 3 single 7/0-9/0 gama octopus hooks, and have glow squid on the top to usually.

Mustad taiwana's in the circles and also gama/owner circles more for deeper water 80+ m.

Ive used 50 pound schnieder for years and other than being slack and not changing it after being chaffed from other fish its never let me down.Never got as bigger dhuies as you fellas down south while i was in Gero but have caught big Sambos on same and skull dragged them up to get rid of em quick and never done any damage to the leader, used it still since ive been up in Dampier and caught big Tevallies on it(which go harder than any Sambo ive caught)and its stood up no probs

Prior planning and preperation prevents piss poor performance

Looks too complicated for me, I'll stick with the Uniknot or simple Snell.

It looks alot more complicated than it actually is, it's pretty easy once you do it a couple of times. there's no harm in trying something new.

I know that knot as a Tuna knot Scott (spirals up & down unlike other knots in general) Never used it...too many knots these days for general use....keeps it interesting!
