Boat Fishing - Help Please
Submitted by dannyg on Thu, 2010-02-04 23:11
Hi There,
I am new to the whole boat fishing scene in Perth, and have just bought myself a 12ft dinghy with 9.9hp engine.
Please can someone advise me where to go fishing in the ocean. I dont want to go too far out because it is only a small boat, and just realy want to get a feed of herring/whiting/skippy/reef fish etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Dan

where are you heading out
where are you heading out from . if from rocko , anywhere around garden isl with some burleying up you can get all of what you are after pluss more. go to the west side between g i and the 5 fathom you could get anything from sand whiting , kg's and skippy right up to pinkies , b/b's and even the odd dhuie will show up.
Out from Two Rocks anything is possible, just look for some ground

thanks guys
I am living in wembley but am happy to travel to go fishing - I am more worried about the swells and the safety especially in the small dinghy...are these spots safe for this type of boat?
thanks once again

Skippers Ticket
Dan - If you have just bought the dingy have you got your Recreational Skippers Ticket as it is require for all vessels with engines about 6 hp. If not be careful as the Marine officers and Water police have been out checking and i think the fine is about $200.

Skippers Ticket
Thanks Iceman for the thought 0 I appreciate it!
I have owned a larger boat before - 3yrs ago (Leeder 710) and did my skippers ticket then. I am just a bit unsure with this smaller boat as to what sort of seas I can take it out it safely.
Thanks once again

danny cockburn sound south
danny cockburn sound south is where i would be either launch from woodmans point or Point Peron. If going out the back of Garden Island pick the weather and the wind. If an Easterly is blowing it can get a bit sloppy out there. Black arse and dhui can be caught in 12m of water if you are lucky.
Near the GI causeway bridge you can pick up herring skippy KGs, whiting. Mangles Bay is good for squid and crabs (if they haven't been fished out already?)
good luck

May i suggest
Slowly introducing yourself to Perth waters?
Putt around in the Swan or in protected(ish) waters (i.e. Cockburn Sound) and get used to Perth waters.
The winds can change here over a flick of a switch and could become dangerous if your not aware of Perth's conditions.
Aside from that, there is plenty of inshore options for small boats. Anchor and burley on most nigga heads for drop offs out from Hillary's or Ocean Reef and 99% of the time sambos/skippy/pinks will come in for a sniff.
Cheers,
Sam
