Fibreglass makes nice boats
Fibreglass makes nice boats but its nasty stuff.
The company I used to work for stopped making fibreglass tanks because its really hard with the danish enviro regs, and bought a company in spain to do the same work, simply because spain had lousy regs. Since spain has tightened up their regs, they now use polyethelene.
You can, and have to, wear a lot of safety gear that makes it safer, but its all there for a reason.

working with glass during
working with glass during the summer you will cook as the amount of safety gear you need to wear is more than an astronaught, on the other hand during the winter you will be nice and cosy, deff no short sleeves and shorts with this work. you could always try commodore marine or just ring around any dealers that do glass

Where
Where are you situated?
There is a fibreglass crayboat builder at Rous Harbour behind Lobster Aust and another just of Posner ST in Henderson that do crayboats and pleasure stuff as well.
Give it a bit of thought though as Till and Russ have said, its nasty stuff to work with.Know a few blokes who when they have got older are major sufferers of emphesemia from the fumes and dust.

So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

Hopefully commodore give you a start mate
I wouldnt let the fumes put you off, just wear the proper ppe. Welding ally lets off nasty fumes also, theres bad parts to any job, just gotta put up with it and look after yourself as best you can.
Good luck mate.

I cant say i know the name of the fumes,
Studies show links to heating aluminium and and alzhiemers (is that how you spell it)
So definately worth wearing a mask under your helmet. Stainless isnt as bad as some, galvanised is definately the worst to weld for fumes by far.

It is not all bad. If you
It is not all bad. If you get a start just make sure you have a good respirator mask and change the filters regularly.
Also wash your clothes seperate to everyone else so you don't all end up itchy. (glass dust can be a bit nasty at first)
Everyone has to start somewhere and if you look after yourself and your gear you will be just fine.

Leisure Cat
Always worth a try at LeisureCat(Fremantle), thats were I did my shipwright apprenticeship and I hear they are working with alot more resin infusion rather that using chopperguns. Working with fiberglass is not as bad as they say, give it a month mate and you will get ued to it.
