nah i dont think they just go blue from being in a tank , i worked at a fish farm apparently they fectch alot more then the brown marron because of its magnificent colour and yes very good for fish tanks. The blue marron are unique to only certain parts of australia , so it would be curious to know if these were takin from a big tank / dam or from the wild aye.
I believe this is a genitic trait of marron, you usually catch them in the same spot. the first time I laid eyes on one was about 30 years ago in the bow river. Ended up sending it to the musem as in the 50 previous years that my granddad had been marroning he hadnt seen one. ended up seeing plenty over the folowing years but could never bring myself to eating them. Either gave them to marron breeders or released them.
When I was living in Brisbane, there was a man made pond up the road that had blue marron in it... but the drought hit pretty hard... they look amazing.
Just a variation. Taste the same as normal marron, just pretty and so it hits the nicenest in us.
Comes in pockets and when you get one their is usually others around.
On the Harvey Quindaning road near Stirling dam over the little bridge there is pockets of them. All smallish and illegal but look cool in the daytime. They dont seem to come out at night on that stretch of river (neither does the normal coloured ones).
I just leave them alone.

I was told that restaurant chefs don't like them because the shells cook up to a sickly pink instead of bright red. But you're right, they taste the same - yummo.
haha it shows how our mind work if they look pretty half the time we feel they are to beautiful or to pretty to kill but a normal jet black marron thats 105ml on the head would have no chance haha

Got to love that blue....
Would look much better in a tank rather than a grill or pot IMO...
Just curious bod, where did you get them ?? (pm me if you prefer - I'm not into catching marron so your secret will be safe !)
cheers,
Paul
