black bass fishing

hey guys

Trip has been booked to new guinea for chrissy this year to catch up with the olds,  were booked into all the usual resorts arround kavieng but also tufi dive resort which has black bass fishing down the Musa River.  Has anyone got any ideas on what lures gear etc to take, or any good articles in fishing mags I can track down.  So far im thinking it's a bit like red bass fishing just in creeks and with baitcasters which i have done a fair bit off.

Ive got so far

calcutta 400 30 pound live fibre 8-10 kilo rod

shimano curado 200e7 20lb 6-10 kilo t-curve

twin power 6000 30lb  lucanus jig spin pe2-3

im thinkin lures like rmg scorps, rapala x raps just dont know what sizes and what depths

any help

From what I've read there

From what I've read there more like Red bass but three times as angry/mean and closer to snags.  May need to up the line class and have a bit more power in the rod dept.  Wish I had relies in PNG....

Lures - any barra type lure will do as long as its strong - upgrade the terminals to XXX

Cheers

Paul

Fishing Wild #6 2008

Thu, 2010-05-06 16:35

I just dragged out an old Fishing Wild book with a good article on Black Bass in PNG, from what they used you are pretty much on par with your outfits, they recommend 30lb braid, lure wise,  again you're on the money with them suggesting Halco 125mm Scorpions, Rapala X rap deep divers and X rap 15's. They also noted that the bass had a preference to gold lures, and definetely upgrade your trebles and split rings to Owners.

Good luck, I'd be taking GT gear to fish for them!!

I read a few articles years

I read a few articles years ago on catching them and I got the impression that 30lb would be on the light side? Dirty strong fighters that love snags would make them far from an easy catch. Very jealous you're gonna go fishing for them as it's always been a dream to go up that way and have a go for them! Make sure you post up a report when you get back with some pics! Have a great time mate!!!
