While blowfish are probably a nessicary part of the ecosystem, I doubt they need to be quite in the plague proportions they are in atm.
I've heard that blowfish like eating the fry of small fish (such as the ones we like to catch), but I'm not sure if its true or not.
If it is, has culling efforts been looked into for blowies? Theres lots of spots where you could take out a large school quickly and easily with a net.

Funny how things change
Funny how things change Colin, I remember going down to Albany as a kid and you could almost walk across Oyster Harbour on the blowies, they were really thick. These days it is pretty rare to see a blowie down there

Dunno about what causes the change Colin, maybe the Borthwicks abbatoir not pumping sheep blood and guts into the harbour any more might have something to do with it.

Maybe Steve, but I think blowies would still have hung around. Not that I'm complaining Steve.

There are millions at Hillarys that are looking for a new home. I just wish I could teach the rock cats at Hillarys to eat the blowies - or visa versa.

Asked the question
There's an Albany based fishing forum, so I've posed the question to the guys on that. A lot of folks in that forum have been fishing Albany and surrounds for years. So it'll be interesting to see what comes back. I'll post any findings.

RE: How to avoid Blowfish.
They say that using lures will avoid the Blowies which is partially true, but still all my Vibes (trebels), minnows (trebels) and Plastics (the whole kit) are get desimated by them.
Cheers lads,

Here's a thought
Perhaps using something like asproclear or berrocca or something which fizzes up, placed in a capsule stuffed in a piece of mulie might help them explode. Cruel I know but funny

Hey keen fisho
It would have been interesting to kjnow what happened to the cat after it ate the blowie. I suspect they probably eat a few dead ones. They're pretty tough cats. I have sen them run outn and grab crabs and eat them.

I know the toxin in blow (toad) fish is very potent. I reckon the cat will be a door stop now.

Yeah Number 2
You would think so. But those things seem to eat everything that is left around. It would be interesting to know if they have built up an immune system.

#1 and others...some interesting observations on blowies
Note sure #1, if you trip over something hard and furry next time, you'll know the answer LOL.
Whilst posting on the local site down here, one of the guys told me (in his reponse) that he reckons the heavy winter rains flush the blowies out of the swan and the snapper wait for and feed on them. His father used to catch inkies and large skippy at these times using blowie strips for bait and that a number of large skippy had blowies in their stomachs! Go figure!

A couple of interesting
A couple of interesting things on pufferfish:
The allure for fugu that the Japanese like is the poison, such that when prepared correctly it leaves a tingling sensation (mostly on the lips). (of course, some people like the taste, but perhaps this is from the prestige factor :p)
The poison is not actually produced by the fish itself, but ingested via tetrodotoxin-producing bacteria. If you grow the fish in a tank without the bacteria present, the fish wont be poisonous. The fish have built up an immune response to the poison which allows them to use it but not be killed by it.
Pufferfish have very little 'junk' DNA (compared to ours which is 80-90% junk DNA). We have 10 times as much DNA, but about the same number of genes.
Not sure how many apply to our lowly blowies, but likely to given they are reasonably closely related.

I believe pufferfish, toadfish, blowfish etc are all related.
As far as the japanese is concerned, I think it would be more about the dare devil excitement from eating fugu, prepared by chefs that must be licensed/accredited.

I think the lack of a serious fresh water flush for many years has to do with the increase in blowies.
And the increase in blowies for the demise of the river prawn.

The two could be related Noha
Your post and the one I posted above about snapper feeding on the 'flushed' blowies.
But if that's the case, why don't the snapper feed on the blowies plaguing the rocks walls?

Their very cheap food for stray cats and dogs but I don't think they taste too good , I leave some in my garden all the time for them , after the first feed the animals don't seem to come back for more
.
