Big bream - how to put the brakes on?

Hi guys,

I think the thread title is pretty self explanatory. For those who regularly chase big bream what size /brand of mainlines / leaders are you using?

I found a spot that is holding some very decent fish in a river somewhere. I had numerous bust offs on 8lb leader and 4lb fireline as a mainline.

Cheers,

Buschy

I use 6lb hard saltwater

I use 6lb hard saltwater mono with either a 8lb or 10lb daiwa tournament leader. sometimes i just tie the hook straight on directly without the leader, i found that mono is defintely the way to go if your chasing bream, much easier to use, no wind knots and you want that extra stretch.

big bream

hey buschy, I fish for bream allot.

last weekend, I got two over 40cm and many others in the 30s. only one massive fish did me in the pylons.

I use 2lb fireline crystal with a 4lb leader, although when I get busted off, I change up to a 8lb leader but stay with the 2lb mainline.

there is no real way to stop them on 2lb, just try lead them away from any structure and try turn their head softly before they get there!!!

caught this one on 2lb  and a 4lb leader right in under the pylons: http://fishwrecked.com/image/another-pic-yesterdays-bream

Master decent knots (Bimini to GT/Alright etc...) that you can have confidence in, then lock the drag up Smile You'll get em out

Yep you're right Si - two of the ones that got away were a result of the knots being pulled but the rest of them we a result of clean break-offs on the mainline or leader.

I probably don't need to change much. I do like the fireline as it is just a joy to cast and so sensitive. I might try a long flouro leader around 12lb which should give me the stretch I need.

Tom - that is a cracker of a fish and you also got my vote this month for POTM.

Cheers all for the advice.

to be honest i would never tie a bimini to gt knot for bream . the improved albright is all you need . as for line 4lb fireline to 6lb leader is the norm for me .
