best spot for a mulloway- perth

hey blokes.

dont get too exited, i dont know the best spot. im wondering where the best spot will be in perth (rockingham-yanchep) to catch a mulloway, i know there will be different opinions. but im not aware of any decent gutters or channels that they would swim in. hopin to get one this saturday morning.

all comments welcome, cheers

ive never caught one but just south of rockingham, from longpoint to san remo is a pretty good stretch of coast. Alot of deep gutters can be found around the surf beaches of Secret Harbour, Golden Bay, Madora and Singleton. Ive noticed from surfing that Madora and Singleton get alot deeper closer to shore rather than Secret Harbour which usually has a sandbar about 50m out

Ive had most of my luck on the beaches north of two rocks, but u do need a 4x4 to access this area so may not help u much. Or as beau suggested a few of the beaches south of perth, generaly hear of quite a few coming from down that way.

I personally know of 5

Tue, 2011-03-15 14:19

I personally know of 5 mulloway being landed from a beach south in the last couple weeks by family members and close friends. a number of fish have also been dropped during these sessions  madora - Smallest being 12kg's and the largest was 23.4kgs with most being close to 20kgs. an 18kg was caught by a family friends 10yo son. Fresh tailor has been doing most of the damage, however the big one was on a fresh herring. all fish have been caught before midnight with 11pm being the latest landed. If i didnt have plans i would be going tomorrow after work with the tide and winds looking perfect you are in with a good chance.

This was the larger one my father caught

Captn MC - With the tailor

Wed, 2011-03-16 08:14

Captn MC - With the tailor they are either filleted, halfed or sent out whole, most of the time they are dead. The herring go out whole and also dead. Probably would be worth sending out a Bridled bait live.

Ususally use 2 snelled hooks. I have been using black magic KL,KS or GZ. and anywhere between the 7/0-9/0. Just making sure the hooks are showing.

i find a snell of 7/0 circles

Tue, 2011-03-15 17:30

i find a snell of 7/0 circles works best. bottom hook just lightly hooking the fish above the spine, not to kill it. second hook down the body, dosnt really matter where, as long as you dont nick the spine and kill it.

 Madora bay is a foreign

Thu, 2011-03-17 08:28

Madora bay is a foreign beach to me, as normallly fish the gutters from golden bay northwards. As it seems to be just one deep bay in madora. Where abouts produce the best? As fished southern carparks last night....no hits at all. The beaches south seemed deeper, but a little less stirred up. The northern carparks seemed a little better in my eyes, but was tagging along with some other fishos. Not trying to get your spot there jezza, just some opinions.

Nice easterly i sent out a balloon for sharks...no joy there either. It was dead....managed a couple of tailor though. Nothing usual there.

Thu, 2011-03-17 11:01

I got my first mulla last night fishing a beach just south of two rocks ate a fresh fillet of herring. Was 12kg so not huge but awesome fish. Also had 3 big runs I resulting in snapped line the other two spooled 300m of 30lb braid of 2 of my rods so I was only fishing with 1 rod.. Berley is also a must from what I've heard and it certainly worked last night

We used to fish for them in

Thu, 2011-03-17 19:34

We used to fish for them in Freo harbour, fish where a ship has just pulled out from, they stir up the bottom and this brings in the fish looking for a feed and the mullas follow. My brother caught 2 that both went close on 50lb each at 2pm on a Saturday afternoon once, heaps of people were lined up behind us to do a visit onto a US navy ship that was docked and they got a good display of mulla fishing from the docks.

Cheers

Dale

Live herring

Thu, 2011-03-17 21:11

Nothing wrong with live herring, IMO they last longer that equivalent size tailor.  Have got big mulloway, salmon, sambos as well as the usual sharks off the beach with them

cuthbad - the one in the picture was landed on fresh herring. i love herring as bait. I have never sent out a livie but ill give it a go saturday night.

My father went down wednesday night and a 25KG was landed. I am still waiting on photos of this one but as he is not in the modern Iphone world it makes life hard. Ill see him on saturday and grab them to post up. Both wednesday and thursday mornings i awoke to messages taunting me of the catches. He is a vegetarian so has only kept 1 fish and that was distributed to the family.

All of these have been from the northern side of Madora beaches.

Found a herring inside

Thu, 2011-03-17 21:08

cuthbad i caught a 17kg mulla at Guilderton on half a scaily, the fish was done and couldn't reliese it.

When i opened it up a fresh herring was inside its gut, it was still twitching, not a mark on it, and of all

things it was tail first.( always thought they took bait head first.)

Got the mullas on both the live and filleted herring. not a touch on the tailor. Also got a 2m shovelnose on the herring fillet. But i have caoght most of mine on tailor, prob coz i use it most but lol.

Might give this mulloway fishing thing a shot in winter some time. Just hope it doesnt take the hundreds of hours some people put in.... Dont think i have that much patience lol

Madora bay

Fri, 2011-03-18 18:34

Going back a year or three the spot to get a mulloway was Madora bay. It was like a school of salmon moving up a beach with rods snapping down then coming back up nearly as quick when gear was busted one after another. It would have been unusual for less than 30 fish caught each night all over 15kg.

The runs went on for about a month each year for about 4-5 years and nearly always over the full moon.

And the bad bit is     I forget which month it was, Jeff was about 3 if I remember correctly and he's 35 ish ??? now.

Another was landed last night

Sun, 2011-03-20 12:43

Another was landed last night at 11.40pm just over 10 kgs, madora yet again. I ended the night with a bust off after an approximately 5 min battle definitely was not a shark. I also landed a rather big eagle ray which jumped twice, I had never seen that before. All hook ups were on fresh still kicking herring, with all herring being hit in less than 10 minutes.

Carnarvonoite - i have a photo of my grandpa and his mates, 13 landed in a 2 hour session at madora. smallest being 14 kgs. ill dig the picture up and post it. i believe it was 1978.
