Got a 14 kg dhui (my biggest) yesterday on tune (stripy) fillet, big chunk on a 9/0 hook (report to come ;). Caught the stripy earlier, so nothing really beats a fresh bait. Also had heaps of them on wrasse fillets.

fresh occy and wrasse suprise today

Sun, 2012-03-04 22:42

fresh occy worked a treat today, pulled up 4 in 30 minutes...didnt seem fair. Then pulled up a 5kg dhuie only to realise that I had hooked a wrasse first that the dhuie then swalloed the wrasse - it was sticking out his mouth when we landed him!! Wrasse was about 10-12" long! Wouldnt have belived it if I hadnt seen it.

One whole californian squid

Sun, 2012-03-04 22:55

One whole californian squid with mullie inserted inside the squid.

First hook pinning tip of squid with mullie head inside.

Second droppper hook through head of squid through body of mullie.

Cut guts of mullie open for scent.

Best bait cocktail on the market for Dhuies/Pinkies.

dhu bait

Mon, 2012-03-05 15:36

i have landed countless dhu's on californian squid, it seems to appeal to everything, but i do agree a fresh (big) fillet of baker , king wrasse, etc can be dynamite on big dhu.    cheers

Skinned occy or western king wrasse

Tue, 2012-03-06 06:49

Interesting post as I have never had any success whatsoever using cuttlie and actually used it, fresh caught, in Jurien with three others on board - they used mulies or occy and cleaned up whilst I didn't get a touch

Loven squid but whole for snapper and have had lots of success but have never yet got a dhuie on it

Fresh skinned occy or small (or fillets of) western king wrasse all reliable producers - the skinned occy has the benefit of producing really good baldies as well

Live herring, or fillet them when they cark it = Dhuie crack.

Caught one on Sat with a fresh slab of Sarge Baker, mid water on the way up. At first i thought it must be a sambo, what a nice surprise.

Fresh

Mon, 2012-03-12 07:57

Fresh is best by far. Live parrot fish, the bigger the better, fresh [unfrozen ] mullet, seargent major chunks, live and filletted herring are my first choices.

Tue, 2012-03-13 09:23

havnt caught a whole lot of dhuies but a fresh slab of wrasse worked well and one instance a live wrasse that i hooked was left without realising i had it only to have a nice size dhuie wanting that fish and got caught on the other hook on the snalled rig so i would say a nice live one would do well. fresh is best but a well presented calafornian squid can work well as well.
