have you used baitcasters
have you used baitcasters before?
Is the spool break adjusted right?
Do you thumb the spool when you cast?
All very important questions
you should at least be answering yes to the second two questions

mate, i am new to this bait
mate, i am new to this bait caster thingy but u have see how i cast.
will be at hillarys this sat sometime between 2-5pm. if u bring yours along,
we could always have a try and error session on how to cast right. i dont use
the spool break. just wet the line (so i dont get line burn) and thumb the spool.
Mr Colin, may i sit in for the lesson too? love to take a lesson from you
about casting those bait casters right.

If you guys get a chance, try going to a local park
to practice as well. Just tie a small sinker onto your line and practice flicking it out. The idea is to start slowly and try not too cast too hard. It is like swinging a golf club. The harder the try to hit the ball, the more likely you are to hit a bad shot.
Practice flicking lures at a target about 10 m away in the park and slowly increase your distance. Make sure your thumb is in position so that you can put pressure on the spool as the sinker begins to descend.
Also make sure you have a balanced outfit and that your rod is not too heavy for the rel size you have.
It is really practice, practice practice.
Your casting style might also have to change. Try casting more like you are swinging a baseball bat.

Absolutely Matt. It may be best if you don't use braid to start
off with guys was if you get a birdsnest it is a real hassle to get the braid untangled - whereas with mono you can quite often pick it apart quite quickly.(Colin 1 - Co-founding member of the prestigious Colin Club)

I back the break right off,
I back the break right off, seriously mate it is all i the thumb, just takes practice practice and more practice. I get a hell of a lot more distance just using my thumb, it is good to get your eye in too so you know when to jam up the spool with the old thumb, right at the base of the snag!
Seings the braid V mono thing was brought up too, i would never put mono on a small calcutta, you just dont get enough line on the spool for the type of fishing we do, and it casts like shit as well as has a memory

Braid vs Mono
Braid will cast better because, if both lines are the same breaking strength, the braid will be about one third the diameter of the mono. Which means three times less air resistance during your cast.
When starting out with a baitcaster, use a streamlined lure like a rear weighted popper or metal...this will minimise the "braking" effect so that your lure isn't travelling slower than line coming off the spool (which causes the backlash/birdsnest).
Lightweight minnow type lures and soft plastics (which tumble when cast) act like parachutes and cause trouble for the inexperienced. Minnows with sliding weights in them, such as Laser Pros and Rapala X-Raps, are much easier to cast.

Get yourself down to a
Get yourself down to a tackle shop and let them show you howts done, then buy a casting plug or attach a small lead and head down to the park for some practise. cast sideways at first and when you get good at it then cast over your head. thumb the spool gently when casting and dont lob your casts give them heaps so you can whatch and have time to stop the over runs with your thump. in no time you should be able to place a bucket 30m away and land the lure in there every cast.its not hard, if i can teach sherbert how to cast one any one should be able to do it.

had flick around the front
had flick around the front yard with a soft plastic and i realsuied what you mean about them not being enough weight. the rod is a shimano GTS and it came with the reel so its balanced quite nicely. was gonna take it when i wen t to mindarie but we had too much crap so it was just extra weight to carry. il try a heavier sinker next time.
