Over 20years since I'v seen a good one in the swan.... poor old river, daily algael bloom reports, not a black swan to be seen, They all moved to tassie, saw more black swans in a week over there than the last 10 or 15 years in perth... ah wait a wile ! Good luck any way, just dont eat anything that you catch up river... ! Cheers
FFS. I see heaps of Swans bumb up in the river every day I drive by. I see lots of reports of the young guys putting in the effort and getting great rewards. I see a spring where we have record rainfall to purge our beautifull waterways of some of the natural hazards that become us. The Swan is a great system!
give it a few more weeks mate. gets you the chance of gettin tailor aswell. last season, there was around one mulloway caught every 3 days or so from the river. flangies got an 18kg one from the narrows last season, and ive deffinartely heard of bigger ones roaming the place. just gotta put the time in and you will get one eventually!
Been a long time since I checked it out, but its in a lot better health than other parts of the world. Should still be pretty happy that you can catch those sorta fish out of it!
Compared to the rest of the world it is absolutely brilliant, the prawns this season were exceptional as were the quality of the crabs and you DONT get that from poor water quality. Anyone diving the Coombe will attest to the number of croaking mullaway to be heard every night and this flush through will only improve it's performance this year.
When we are out on the river we clean up any and all floating rubbish we encounter - if everyone did likewise it would be even better.
i HATE it how people leave their junk behind, i mean just take a damn trash bag and dumpt it in the bin when you leave.
oh and the smokers (im sorry to say are pretty much all recent asian immigrants), dont get me wrong i do have the odd smoke but dont flick your damn butts into the water that your fishing.
(sorry to offend any one out there, im half asian...what i have said is only from my own experiences)
I am more than happy to eat fish from the swan river .tailor at canning bridge, bream from guilford.flathead ,point walter.got to love the swan .shame about the cobbler and river prawns.
try at blackwall reach overnight near a full moon. alwasys seem to get a run from something there and caught 2 in the last 6 months. both about 9-12kgs. but i have lost bigger there(i usually use about 15pound line on a terrible drag). something even snapped my 50pound one night. jsut throw out a 35cm tailor or like half of a 40cmish
I have lost 2 metal vibe lure's to tailor this week up the river, if the Swan was that bad tailor wouldn't be this far up the river this time of the year!
I was thinking of useing metal vibes this year on tailor, great to hear they work, i got a Damiki Vault recently, man those vibes really vibrate, i bet the tailor love them,,Mulloway also but you would have to be in the right spot at the right time,,,
20 year's ago you could swim at basso, eat fish, ect,ect... Now you will get an ear infection,At MIN, you used to be able to see the bottem of the river off the jetty, now it smells like ---- . I cant remeber any algael bloom's let alone 5 to 10 diffrent spots every day or 2.And some call that a natural hazard more like crap fertlizers from all those grapes.. Then we have the Pest fish in M brook that no doubt have been flushed out into the swan with "all that rain"this is the fish that the gov tryed to BLOW UP yes blow up with tax payer funded explosive's for months on end... think it is a { Cyclad } sic-lad.... The prawn's from sandy beach, NO MORE all gone......Bit sad.... ..... Darryl
The swan/canning deffinitley isn't as clean as it was 20/50/100yrs ago, but what do you expect with 1.5 mil people living around it. As someone has already mentioned, it's still a hell of a lot cleaner then many other rivers in other capital cities around australia and the world.
I swim in the river regularly thought the year and i've never had a problem eating fish out of there either.
I'm sure there will be a few mulloway around at the moment, probably worth a bash in the downstream locations, personally I'm going to wait a few more months and give some of my upstream locations a try.
A couple of years back i went on a paddle steamer in Brissy. It constantly astounds me that the river there (even on tv) is a red brown colour! Yet i recently sat on the front of my little boat prawning and was pointing out to my kids that despite the depth there we could indeed see the bottom on an outgoing tide and everything swimming out with it! I think that speaks volumes of the quality! And yes we eat, fish, swim and ski in the river and no we don't get sick. I think it would be nice tho if we could preserve it as much as possible for the future. Our kids love dolphin spotting up river near maylands and i would like to think if it was that bad that they wouldn't be there. I trust them mmore then some people.
The Swan river is by far the healthiest river system I have seen in any large city. A good poitn made by you Flash As - dolphins, blue water - the Swan is very healthly when you consider the number of users and people living so close to it.
It is when people think that the river is dirty/unhealthy that they stop looking after and then the real problems begin. I think and certainly hope that people are way too proud of the river and value it too much to ever let it get run down/trashed.
ive been wading in the river several times, and ive never had any problems... except for being nipped by a blue swimmer at the narrows. lol always love going for a wade on point walter. great fish and always good to be waist deep in cold water on a 35 degree day.
They are MANAGED water system's that are stunning.. With big city's on them and people using them every day.. And older than Perth.. The Swan is top river it is a sad thing for one who grew up on the river to see it change so much in the last 15 to 20 years, It is only in the last 3 or 5 years the swan river trust is getting some of the resorces that the govt keep promising to deal with the issues they/we face..
It amazes me that it can be on tv and in papers that our river is suffering and things needed to be done before the river turned toxic in places, This was said as a warning to us all about the state of the river. The treatment plant near perth and the race course still has an over flow pipe into the river! If you choose to eat something that has lived in human excrement thats your choice..Just because you see or catch a fish does not necessarily mean its a healthy river haven't you seen fish living in pollution before? If i did not care i would not even mention it, If people with their "she'll be right" or "someone else will do it ", Attitude that ignore something till its to late...... I WANT the SWAN to be better and cleaner and am more than happy to do my bit to make it so.....Dismissing the state of the river as "OK" just adds to the lack of knowledge about what could be done to make this river as good as it could be and was...AS said UP RIVER from Perth
thanks guys for the feedback,i might give it a go this weekend of mosmans jetty and see what happens, because my boat is 4 sale at access marine because i want 2 buy a bigger boat, but like i said have 2 give it ago like in my younger days, will let every1 know how i go,cheers
went 4 a fish last night, got a couple of runs around the corner from rocky bay, hooked one unstopable that bit me of,not sure if it was the elusive swan river whaler,i was playing it for 5 - 10 mins,an hour later i hooked a 1mtr wide stingray ,which i landed it within 15 minutes, that i released, never caught a sting ray in the river before, this proves the swan river is still a good system, that every1 has to try harder to protect, any i had a gr8 night, also before i forget i spotted a big flathead in the shallows, another question;how do you fish in a heavy curent? my 4 oz sinker just held the bottom at times.
we had a fish at pt walter for the night.... was comfortable until the rain came in at 2 this mronin... totally absolutely drenched althrough.got one tiny run but it was probably a crab. was the water clarity really murky where you were?
it was a little murky murky, but pretty clear leemo,i think the water will clear in the next couple of weeks and the fishing will get better, i predict a good mulloway season this year with all the rain we have had this year,i hope my predictions right
i think it will take a while fo the river to clear up after all the rain we have had and there would be a lot of fresh water running atm so i would give it around a month before you start getting some good reports from the river
Rather be tailor fishing in the next few weeks to be honest, have a feeling some hooters will be around this season. then from october 12th ill be hittin the swan pretty damn hard
