i have a fair bit to say about this topic, but there are greiving families out there right now, so i'll give it the mourning period it deserves.

condolences to their family,

condolences to their family, culling of things like shark, crocodiles and pesky critters to a safe level is the only solution to these things, example crocs are getting out of control and nothing eats them but each other, so someones got to cull them back abit, thats just one example, i know theres plenty more but it will touch some sensitive people.

The guy was from down my way, so hopefully I dont know who it is. People in Busso just seems to have a knack of knowing everyone else, it's only 1 degree of seperation down there as a rule.

Cheers

Tue, 2010-08-17 14:25

A tragic event, i can't help wondering if a shark shield would have prevented it,we will never know i guess.

Second fatal one there in 6 years ? A dangerous area for sure,,

But how many have been

Tue, 2010-08-17 16:21

But how many have been killed in the SW in a car, or drowning, or various other causes?

One of the rarest ways to go actually, even when you factor in time spent in the water. Though, stories of sharp mouths seem to beat out the stories of say people choking. Not too surprising I guess (especially if they reported people dying by choking, you'd get sick of hearing about it...) based on the fear people have for sharks. Still is a sad thing of course, but put into context, sharks arent nearly as dangerous as other things.

I don't think the family is really interested about things being put into context at this time.  Always the analyst.

My condolences to the family.

A tradgedy is a tradgedy. Its still a sad loss for the family.
I was only referring to the bit about the waters being dangerous. Didnt intend for my post to come up as otherwise (but its very hard ensuring you arent taken out of context yourself when you only have text to work with).

Sad day and a reminder to

Tue, 2010-08-17 15:05

Sad day and a reminder to all who venture into the ocean that we humans are the ones out of place. Really hit me hearing this as i just spent last weekend down there on a Surf Camp. Though i didnt go out to South Point(waves to big and i'm a wuss) i did go out at Huzza's only a short distance away. I can honestly say not once did it even cross my mind, that someone had been taken in this bay only years before, or that there could be sharks in the area. Dont think it will stop me going out looking for awesome waves to ride, but i think i might give the West Coast a bit of a break for a while and wait for waves on the Bay side.

a mate sent me this today. pretty funny but didn't do much for my confidence in what was my first port of call should i choose to do anything but continue to ignore the threat when surfing these waters. condolences to friends and family. you're right Dale - 1 degree of separation down here so i'm waiting to find out how i know him.
