Not sure why we cop the highest rec fishing licence fees in the country, yet get some of the worst support. Dosn't seem based on fisher numbers either, as NSW claim 1 million rec fishers to WA's 620,000,, say 2:1, but we can pay 7 times the licence fees to access the full range of fishing covered. Personally, I think other states have a better balance of support between rec and commercial than WA.
Just grabbed the following quotes from the WA government website (www.fish.gov.wa.au). If the value was reflected in the actions, you'd think rec fishers would get priority.
"Commercial fishing, including pearling and aquaculture, contributes around one billion dollars to Western Australia's economy each year."
"More than one in four West Australians fish recreationally at least once a year, which generates $2.4 billion to the state economy, and has social and wellbeing benefits."
A Recfish webpage from 4 days ago says the change starts next month.https://recfishwest.org.au/news/greenlip-abalone-closure-necessary-but-disappointing-and-avoidable/
Looking at the graph of historical catches on that page ,it is clear the total rec catch is miniscule compared to the commercial catch. The commercial take was obviously not being managed sustainably for the last decade.
I can't see why they would close both, as the stock recovery is very unlikely to be influenced by the recreational take. I would have simply closed the commercial take, then perhaps thought about tweaking the rec fishery controls, if at all.
Recfishwest saying this is necessary is a bit of a pisstake they would have known about this for a couple of years and our so called representatives couldn't argue that the rec take has f#ckto do with dwindling stocks even with the evidence right in front of them in graph form .I think we're doomed this will be another Cockburn crab closer no end date knowing full well the stocks will never get back to commercial quantities of the past like they did there where it ends I don't know but I wouldn't be filling in forms or doing surveys at ramps no matter what you catch as who knows what's on there radars next. Squid whiting shit they just done garfish and pink snapper are endangered apparently
wasnt there a big kill when they started the new marina at ocean reef? i heard some reports of heaps of dead abalone and destruction of a fair size amount of ground/beds. funny how thisis ok, but a tightly regulated recc sector needs ot be banned... guess money is all that really matters.
