Alvey Turbocast - what exactly is it?

Hi,

Looking for a new alvey to suit a 12-13ft rod. I have a 650BCVRR at the moment. I like it, the first Alvey I have owned.

Looking at another, minus the RR handle. Noticed a feature called Turbocast i can add to any 650 reel.
Read the description of it on the Alvey website, but farked if I can work out in my head how it works.

Says I hold the lever for casting? I currently thumb the line down onto the back of the spool. Not really sure how this T/C is supposed to work.

Can anyone shed some light?

Cheers,

D80

Alvey Turbo Cast

D80,

Reel for reel the6500BCVRR/6500BCVRRT are almost identical.

The 6500BCVRRT is about 15 grams lighter than your current reel and of course you are minus the  Turbo Cast action.

What is TC?

As best as I can explain.......

The mechanism at the top of the spool that is the connection between rod and reel is Reinforced Fibreglas, not metal.

Not metal   = No rust.

A smidgeon lighter = Less weight to carry or cast.

Stronger = Any increase in strength with reduced weight is a bonus.

Incorporated into the TC mechanism is a simplified side cast lever. You just depress and turn the reel.

It is an easier action, thus less tiring when fishing/casting all day.

The actual Turbo Cast lever is in a different position & further away from the rod which provides easier access & manipulation for casting.

This improvement helps to provide surf casters  greater distance.  ( Not for me, I am past it)

The change might be only minor, but it is a great leap forward in product improvement & casability.

Anything that reduces seawater corrosion is in my book a beneficial advancement.

Cheers

Russell

PS Anyone that owns an Alvey, knows that when you drop your Alvey reel in the water or in the sand,

it is rinse the sand off in the water or just shake the water off and continue fishing.

When finished for the day, give the reel a cleanup, it is that simple.

I don't like the RR handle, so will get the BCV handle but add the T/C.

Sounds like it is worth having.

Apart from the lever being replaced with a button to turn the reel, does the rest of the casting action remain the same? ie I can still thumb the spool etc?

D80,

The 650BT has no RR Rapid Retrieve.

As mentioned by another, contact Alvey direct.

Glen Alvey is a top bloke & they respond pretty darn quick.
