AFL Trade Week
Submitted by big john on Mon, 2023-10-09 13:14
What was looking like a quiet trade period has gone boom in the last few days.
As a Pies fan, I'd be disappointed to lose Taylor Adams but it will free up some cap space and we've got some young midfielders in the VFL which need AFL minutes.
Lachie Schultz could be a great get, with McCreery hopefully going into the midfield in 2024. Schultz could eventually replace Billy Elliot in the forward line.
A lot of water to go under the bridge to get that deal done but we're rapidly becoming a destination club.

Similar thoughts
Yep, I was initially wondering why we would want another small forward, however he would be a great replacement for Elliot who in my opinion, was pretty ordinary in the finals and at 31 probably only has another season or 2 of decent footy in him. I am a little concerned at what Freo might ask for given their request for a top 10 pick for Henry..... I understand they have invested heavily in him over the journey but a mid second round pick is about what he is worth I would have thought.
Would be a shame to see Adams go but gives Mcrae a chance to break in after knocking on the door all season. Should be well and truly ready to fire now.

Not good losing players, but guess they will be wanting decent return for Henry and Schultz.
Schultz still with a year to run so will play hard ball like they did with Lobb.

Play hard ball, get him to
Play hard ball, get him to re-sign or don't play him in 24...
Players have too much power, pies need to cough up or fuck him over...
He wants to get to Pies, Freo have every right to put their price on his head just like cats did with TK and giants did with JC

You could do that....
Sure Freo could do that, but after his contract runs out next year he is an unrestricted free agent and can go as he pleases. Freo have little bargaining power now, and absolutely none if they decide to play hard ball and keep him for an additional year.
I know you aren't a freo supporter but I understand lots of fans get disgruntled when a player requests a trade and think the club should play hard ball out of spite, but that certainly isn't going to benefit Freo in any way! Their best bet is to try and negotiate an appealing contract extension if they want to keep him.

Geeeez, what the **ck is going on at Freo. Freo didn't show the love towards lachie and they are now paying the price, same with Acres. I can handle the other players leaving, even that mistaken ridden frustrating Henry.
Who's next, Darcy ???
On another note, geez, WC could get a bumper deal done with NM and load up. I aint no WC fan but I would be seriously considering a pick swap.

Pick swap period has ended
Pick swap period has ended and WCE are holding out on pick 1.
Seems the best offer was Melbourne with 6,11,42 and their 2024 1st rounder.
North after their first laughable dip offered 2 and 2x picks in the late teens for 23. So basically giving up 1 and 23 for 2, 15 and 18.
There's still the chance of a pick swap on the night but sounds like it'll have to be a godfather offer.

Once a player is drafted then
Once a player is drafted then they are contracted to that club. It'd be just like the Cam McCarthy situation where if they refuse to play for a club then they also cannot play the next tier down like VFL, WAFL, SANFL also. Unlike the McCarthy situation where he had one season to sit out, draftees are contracted for 3 years so it'd then be up to the club for try and facilitate a trade at the end of the first season.

Still currently 2 years,
Still currently 2 years, next draft turns to 3 I'm pretty sure.
My point prior was not to disagree with you but you are always seeing things through your WC rose coloured glasses.
You call North's offer of 2,15&18 laughable for 1,23!!!!
That is fucking hilarious.
North don't need a heap of young stars, they are well stacked...
Melbourne might want to do a deal to snare Harley but I really don't see why clubs would bother pick swapping with WC.
It's WC that are in the dark deep hole, they are the ones that need multiple good youngsters and with 1+23 that gets you one good youngster but in a weak draft 23 could be dog turd...
Hawks, North and Melbourne should stick fat and either Goto draft with what they've got or let WC come to them.
Just my opinion of course Frosty.
Bring on 2024

Totally wasn't a dig at WC, I just don't see why clubs would bend over to facilitate anything with the worst team in the history of the AFL.
They've made shit decisions in recent years and now they are trying to dig themselves out of that hole.
I hope they get back to being competitive, it makes the draw unfair for teams that only get to play them once.
They'll be worse this year....

We'll find out in a week I
We'll find out Monday I suppose.
I haven't read anything about him being a flight risk beside a story by Sam McClueless which was shot down in flames by Reid himself on radio even taking a sideswipe at McClueless in the interview. He lives about 15 mins from the NSW border so not exactly inner City Melbourne and we have a strong record of retaining interstate players. McKercher being from Tassie is a far greater flight risk than Reid.
WC can either take a player seen as a 'generational talent' to add to Ginbey and Hewett in the middle to setup our midfield for a decade or be wowed by a ridiculous offer but by all accounts the talent in this draft drops off significantly after the top 10.
Word is the WC are looking to trade out their 2024 first rounder if Curtin slips past Hawthorn. High risk, high reward tactic but I watched a bit of Curtin this year and the kid is elite and well rounded.
It'd be nice if any of our 92/94 players had produced boys that can play.... the boys obviously married non athletic socialites!

Ha, sorry Andy didn't see your post...
Just using headlines mate haha...
WC are probably the most successful team in the modern era ( even having to nearly drown in their supporters tears because of the travel and pro Vic AFL ).
But... WC in the past two years are worse than Fitzroy, Fitzroy got booted because they were so shitful....
Unfortunately this year will be worse.
I can see North and GC ten goaling WC this year but that's just my opinion.
Frosty... You're telling me a bloke I've never heard of from Tasmania is more of a flight risk than a generational player that every club in the East will be throwing 1.5/yr at?? Son you are a dreamer. Is Tasman going back to play for the Jack jumpers?
Tough position for WC, they'll know they'll need to throw the bank at Reid before he comes out of contract but that's how you can dig a salary cap hole which is another reason WC are as shitful as they are.
Wasn't just McLure reporting Reid didn't want to come to WC.
Reid changed his tune once it became a thing.

The AFL will be bending over
The AFL will be bending over backwards that we don't see another CGS or GWS which will include heavy concessions on Tassie chasing established/emerging senior talent talent. By the 2026 trade period McKercher (who is from Launceston) will have 4 seasons under his belt and will be coming unto his prime. Very heavy go home factor there with AFL assistance to boot.
