Advice needed on Gear Ratios for Popping/ Jigging

gday all,

I'm going to buy a top end large Spinner in the next few weeks, but I would like to get some use out it up north as well as local fishing.   We plan on popping for GTs at the Montes and other north trips, but I don't want to be limited to just that.  I would like to use it for jigging as well.

Would it be better to go for a lower gear ratio and thus a slower retreive so you can have the cranking power to Jig and haul up big brutes from the deep, and then if you want to pop then you just have to work harder to get the action on the lure.

It was my understanding that most of the crew that pop all the time have a reels with high ratios, then use another reel to do other types of fishing.  Is there a good happy medium, to get as much use out of one reel as you can.

Any advice or personal preferences would be great.

Jared

I'd get a lower gear ratio to be an allrounder (ie Stella 20000).

Not really sure you can get a win in here without spending the $$$.

I think either Jay or Brad once said that it looks like you'rte doing all the work when you're trying to pop with a 20k instead of an 18k, but all the other guys get the hits. In reality, you're probably doing 120% of the work, they have the gearing to help.

I've personally found jigging with high-gear reels pretty terrible, I try and aim for about 1m per turn.

On a recent trip to exmouth I was using a fairly low-gear spinner for metals and popping and I actually damaged my arm, it seems better after a trip to the Abrolhos using a faster reel.

the thing is, you want a high ratio for popping close to 6:1 and something less than 5 for jigging. popping with a jigging reel is crap and vice versa.
Pick the one your more likley to use most often. If your going to jig more get a 20000 if your going to pop get an 18000
if i could get away with one reel i would

mmm  interesting.  Maybe the PG versions are sort of middle ground at 4.9:1.  But the 8000 could be a touch small.  Although the 8 and 10 are the same reel, different spool size.

A 20000 is the bottom end at 4.4 and the 10000 is the top at 5.8.

10000SW is too small mate,

10000SW is too small mate, 10000FA is ok. you want to be able to put at least pe8 100lb on your popping reel if you want any chance of stpping the brutes consistantly. You chuck that on a 10000 and you will not have any where near as much capacity as you require.

it is a common problem mate, if you solve the answer there will be a lot of people who want your advice

bottom lie is you are always compromising something one way or another with an all rounder

I use to pop with a 10000fa

I use to pop with a 10000fa & now will be popping with a 20000sw. Each to their own really.

The extra line lay per crank of the handle (20k vs. 18k) is negligible whilst popping IMO. I consider myself pretty quick if I need to get line in. I've fish with some blokes that can't wind fast if their life depended on it.

However, I wouldn't consider using a high gear ratio reel for jigging.

As the other blokes have mentioned, get a reel you'll be able to use more often. I pop around 4 times a year and jig more often.

Spinning reels

My advice to you is if you don't have the money to buy both, is to purchase a 20k Stella. I busted a drag knob on my Dog Fight when I was in New Caledonia last year, so I had to resort to using my 20k for the rest of the trip. Though I had to work a lot harder to entice strikes, it still worked and is a far more practical reel to own here in Perth than a Dog Fight is.

I'm leaning towards a 20000 then

Daz I  totally agree with you, it will get heaps of use locally jigging Sambos and even the odd bottom bash, although I have other gear for that, but will also be up to the task for any  popping session.

I'd go a 20000sw over a 6500exp (even though I have both, I prefer the SW stellas).

The saragosa would be a good choice if funds are limited.
