The 2lb challenge is entered

I finally got off my butt and went for a serious hunt tonight for some bream on 2lb gear to try and get a contendor for the Tackle Shack 2lb challenge.
My youngest daughter, Rebecca, was keen to go fishing as well, so we drove up to Mindarie to try out a favourite spot of ours.
WE arrived about a half hour before dark and I tossed out some soft plastics while Rebecca went on the hunt for live bait.
The blowies were fairly thick and I managed to land two sizeable ones on a Gulp minnow. A great fight on the 2lb gear.
With the sun finally starting to sink below the horizon it was time to get serious. As Becca hadn't had a lot of joy in catching any small prawns or crabs, we settled on peeled prawns, rigged up on a small SP jighead.
The first cast produced a nice, fat school whiting. The next three casts produced the same and I was starting to get worried that maybe the bream weren't going to make a show.
Then the next cast produced a nice, little black bream of about 20 cm. The following cast a black bream of 26 cm and the following cast a more reasonable 29cm. All great fun on the 2lb line.
Things were looking pretty good.
Bec and I then managed to catch another dozen or so whiting, three smaller black bream and five small tarwhine.
The most amazing capture was a nice Blue Manna crab. I have caught crabs on my lines before, normally after they have become tangled in the line, but this was the first time I have caught one where it was hooked in the mouth.
Hopefully, I will be able to upload the pics with this report. Otherwise I will have to load them separately.
I am sure my 29cm slugger will soon be passed, but it was a nice feeling to make a plan and to catch the targeted species on the targeted rig - and even better was going fishing with my daughter.
All the best, Colin Hay

Looks like you got a fair

Wed, 2008-07-16 23:59

Looks like you got a fair few fish, combined with light line for the fun, sounds like a good session. I think i'd be happy with just one of those fish (well, except the blowies)

Where abouts were you fishing btw (rough area), guessing lower river?

Btw, I heard from someone that crabs like SP's. Apparently he caught a few by dropping a SP, and the crab would cover it and lift it out. Doesnt work when the blowies are around as the crab doesnt get time to get the SP. Havent tried it myself yet though. I doubt you could chuck a bunch in a crab-pot btw.

We fished at Mindarie

I guess the crabs would go them, especially if they were scented. I had a Grey Heron trying to open my clear plastic case in an attempt to get at some soft plastics at Hillarys the other day.

Good result in the end Col!

Interesting that you pulled both silver and black from the same spot! Well done. Nothing wrong with a 29cm, at this stage it's a winner LOL. You've got me motivated! Now the weather is better - I'm going tomorrow.

As I was telling you earlier, it was like the fish were working shifts. The blowies were everywhere until the sun went down, then the whiting came on the bite, they moved out and the black bream took over, then they moved out and the whiting came back, then they moved out and the tarwhine moved in. All within about 1 1/2 hours.

Interesting experience

Thu, 2008-07-17 07:57

Yeah, as you explained on the phone, weird how they predate in revolving 'shifts' Perhaps they are moving in schools at different spots and times.

I had to get in while I could as I am off to Egypt on Saturday so I expect to see some much bigger fish have gone past me in the next few weeks.
I hope one of the monthly 2lb categories is Blue Manna crabs. I know a "hot spot".

I was tossing up taking a rod and reel, but I have had bad experiences with international bag handlers before. I am taking a handline as the cruise boat we are booked on for our Nile River cruise has a balcony for every room. Just hope we get a bottom floor room. If not, I hate to think what the passengers in the room below us would think if they see a Soft Plastic dropping down past their window.

It had just been belting down rain and my daughter and I were freezing and trying to get that bream to stay still so we could get a pic. So we just put it down and started snapping away.

Tommo, mate, the big fish is just around the corner with all the effort you have been putting in. Next time you catch a yellowtail, put it out live and that big fish (or shark or stingray) just might come along.

I read in a previous post

Thu, 2008-07-17 12:54

I read in a previous post that at some time the marinas had been stocked with black bream. Don't know how true it is, but there are certainly a few at Mindarie and the occassional good ones caught at Hillarys near Spinnakers. (Damn I just gave away some secret spots).

Black bream are still found

Thu, 2008-07-17 13:11

Black bream are still found along the coast even if they prefer the estuary systems/rivers. Not nessicarily common, and not their preffered habitat of course. The recent rains we are having would flush some out though. Over east, they target yellowfin bream are found along ocean rockwalls (diff species to black bream though, but still similar).

And if there are black bream populations in lots of river systems, they would have to get there somehow.

What I find most surprising though, is that Colin went fishing in the ocean and didnt catch a skippy Surprised

That's up to Brendan and the Tackle Shack guys, but I am guessing they would be a likely species for this type of competition.

I have to admit, the small fish I

Fri, 2008-07-18 19:57

caught were a bit soft with the 2lb Spess. A decent sized bream would be a reasonable tussle. The hardest thing at the moment is getting some decent weather to get out and have a crack.
