Great pickup - will be watching the forecast keenly!

Im trying to learn to better read the weather - i cant see anything on the synopsis charts that would explain that. Few big fronts down near Antarctica but they dont look to be passing until later in the week ? Interested to find out how the period jumps so much with only minor jump in height?

Yep, Christmas Day last year. Lost sight of my folks boat the other side of what would normally be a small swell.

Basically the period is a measure of how powerful the wave is, higher period =  stronger wave, basically short sharp waves versus big long powerful swells

dustry

this link gives a good run through on explaining it

basically a high swell period means bigger sets with more energy , can be good for surfers if its clean , with the right wind or break , but for boaties it means look out , swell/breaking waves will be bigger than the norm for a predicted swell height , and especially in shallow [less than 10 metres ] depths ..but not restricted to that only

https://www.surfline.com/surf-news/the-importance-of-swell-period/1555
Swell period performs its final role once a swell reaches the surf zone and shoaling kicks in. While closing in on the shore, the leading edge of a swell dragging along the seafloor slows down more than the trailing edge does. The resultant backup gives the incoming water nowhere to go but up, so wave height increases. The longer the swell period, the more water gets pushed upward. A 3-foot wave with a 10-second swell period may only grow to be a 4-foot breaking wave, while a 3-foot wave with a 20-second swell period can jack up to be a 15-foot breaking wave given the right ocean floor bathymetry. That is a fivefold increase from the deep-water swell height and a prime example of why anyone who ignores the importance of swell period does so at their own peril.

Worry about what the conditions are like is one of the reasons I don't get out on the ocean as often as I like. It would be great if there was an interpretation of the focecast to give a real world explaination of how safe and comfortable it is to go out in each of the popular launch spots. Insurance companies could even offer discounts to people who only venture out in 'acceptable' conditions.

Wed, 2020-12-30 09:46

Swell was solid yesterday afternoon here in Yallingup... Surfed supers until 7 last night and it definitely a good new ground swell! Very solid for a 2m... Everyone that paddled out was kinda surprised at the size

Wed, 2020-12-30 21:46

We were out the back at around 9 and wow did it change quickly. Left the ramp in an easterly and it was a northerly at herring bay. We turned back and went into Herring bay and jeez it was breaking hard so we headed into pig trough.

we had been watching the forecast for days and they just couldn't agree on what it was going to look like and in the end they all got it wrong!

So many boats out and slamming into what was meant to be 8-10 knots of northerly, or was that a south easterly...either way, not 18-20 knots!

 Swell pumping in up here

Wed, 2020-12-30 17:36

Swell pumping in up here with a strong shore surge. F^*k this NW wind crap and what a balls up forecast from Seabreeze ha ha still showing light winds till Friday. Not that I ever rely on their forecast but I do use it as a comparison. Once again shit Xmas weather for boating boo hoo but did manage a pretty good mixed bag yesterday of Dhu, Baldies, Blackarse, Shark and a 600mm Flattie in 40m
