19 minutes 21 seconds - world record for underwater freedive

A Swiss diver has broken the world record for holding his breath underwater - for 19 minutes and 21 seconds.

Freediver
Peter Colat, 38, said the first 12 minutes without air were 'no
problem' after plunging into a water tank at a holiday fair in St
Gallen, Switzerland.

Mr Colat smashed the previous record held by Italian Nicola Putignano by 19 seconds.

Under
the rules for so-called 'static apnea' laid down by the Guinness World
Records, Mr Colat was allowed to breath pure oxygen for ten minutes
before the feat yesterday.

He said afterwards: 'The first 12
minutes were not a problem and I felt the first need to breathe very
late, but because of this it was even stronger.'

According to the British Freediving Association, participants must
'enter a very relaxed state so as to minimise oxygen consumption.'

Breathless: Under the rules of the record, Peter Colat was permitted to breathe pure oxygen for ten minutes before the feat

It
adds that: 'Eventually, the store of oxygen will reduce to critical
levels, resulting in hypoxia, and possibly black-out if the freediver
fails to listen to his body or ignores what he hears.'

mate, i enjoy snorkeling around some shallow reefs and strugle to hold my breath for 30sec, when diving.

how the hell do they do this?

is it because they are not moving?

what is the longest time for someone swimming around?

then you have to think about the bitties as well!

there was a article in a freediving mag or somewhere about a Sydney bloke who did 7mins something, and I was impressed with that. I can't even sit still for 19mins let alone hold my breath!

I wonder if the record for holding breath out of the water would be higher becaus it takes less energy because your not swimming..... anyway what do they mean by "breath pure oxygen" i mean dont we breath pure oxygen anyway?.....

The air we breathe

Wed, 2010-02-17 12:48

Dry air contains roughly (by volume) 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.038% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases. Air also contains a variable amount of water vapor, on average around 1%.

Pure oxygen is actually toxic at pressure : Prolonged breathing of an air mixture with an O2 partial pressure more than 60 kPa can eventually lead to permanent pulmonary fibrosis.[106] Exposure to a O2 partial pressures greater than 160 kPa may lead to convulsions (normally fatal for divers). Acute oxygen toxicity can occur by breathing an air mixture with 21% O2 at 66 m or more of depth while the same thing can occur by breathing 100% O2 at only 6 m.[106][107][108][109]

I believe the world record

Tue, 2010-02-16 21:29

I believe the world record for holding breath out of in water should be about the same at a guess. The guy underwater would've just been sitting/lying/whatever in a tank underwater, not swimming. Possibly even expending less energy than out of water because the water would be supporting his bodyweight.

And no, we breathe air, not oxygen. Air is made up of about 20% oxygen, around 78% nitrogen and tiny parts of many other gases. When you breathe 100% oxygen it allows you to increase the amount of oxygen carried in the blood. It means that if you hold your breath, it allows your muscles to maintain oxygen supply for a little while longer.

great accomplishment

Tue, 2010-02-16 21:33

but probably the mecca for freedive is an air only freedive through the arch at the blue hole in dahab with no fins. I'm too old for that now, but at one point that was my dream.

at 19 mins he'll get through that in a breeze.

Impressive but hardly pure static apnea. Bit of a 'stunt' for the Guiness world Book of Records.

It is not recognised by AIDA and I believe the current static apnea record was set by Mifsud n France at 11min 35sec.
