Did some Shark / Ray Fishing over Xmas in South Africa, Western Cape.
Submitted by Blue Whaler on Sun, 2011-01-09 08:05Hi Guys;
Just came back from holiday out in South Africa. Got some time to wet the lines and have some back breaking fun.
Spend most of my time around the Western Cape targeting Shad (Tailor) and Bronzies, Spotties and Smoothhound Sharks on the reefs. Macassar and Monwabisi around the Western Cape seemed to be the place for sharks. Caught a nice size Cob (Mulloway) 58cm and got completly smashed by the Smoothhound Sharks out on the Strand Reefs. We kitted out in our wetsuits and move from reef to reef untill we were about 200mt off shore in about 6 ft of water. Got out onto a reef that got us out of the water, however everytime I cast I got hammered and pulled twice into the water by the smoothies. Three smoothies caught by my mates and a unforgettable day at that.
I added a photo of Harolds Bay, me sitting high up the rocks awaiting huge Black Rays / Ragged tooth Shark pick ups. Second a pic of the throw baits I made use of for the rays.
Hope you enjoy these.
(To the Shark Fishing Group Perth - as soon as my container lands with my shark gear I will join you guys. )
Till then
Cheers

Moore river report
Submitted by Rig on Wed, 2011-01-05 20:52Hi Guys
spent 4 days up at moore river from new years day.
I mostly fished the 3 mile reef with the other 100 punters but had a blast catching heaps of tailor to 40cm and lots of herring with some bulls going over 30cm!!!!!! and was very hard to get a tailor bait past them.
Nothing too big to report apart froma couple of rays as I couldnt fish long at night due to family commitments, although the tides were perfect
Alot of people were camped up there and enjoying some good conditions but unfortunately some of them left alot of rubbish behind. On the way back past wilbinga grove and noticed the rest area was also covered with rubbish. good way to get these places shut off!
no photos sorry
cheers

mulloway madness
Submitted by young_yakker on Wed, 2011-01-05 18:28two nights before new years i caught this beauty it weighed a staggering 20kg, it wasnt a long fight but with its enormous head shakes i could identify the fish as a mulloway before it breached the murky water. What a feeling seeing a huge fish surface with its gold flanks flashing with the bright light.Back to the story this is my second mulloway and a good size at that what a way to finish a already great year with alot of first's and some nice pb's.
i also caught this on a reel i got for christmas and a rod i bought that day, what a way to cristen a nice combo.
hope everybody has a good new year
cheers Brad.
sorry for bad quality pic as it was off a phone some people took some decent photos but have failed to deliver them.

Time for another group fish??? Sharks/tailor.. north/south?
Submitted by Bungel on Sun, 2010-12-26 13:35Im out of here for a month on the 6th of january. Hitting the mines again.
I would really like to get away for another good fishing trip with the forum guys again. Sharks would definatly be the target but wouldnt mind a few tailor too.
North or South, im not too fussed. I can offer a lift to any of the guys close to Scarborough Beach area if needed.
Let us know who is keen, was a great group we had last time. Think i will bring some better slide baiting gear as ballooning was a bit of a mess.
Cheers,
George.

Top destinations for targeting GT's in Australia.?
Submitted by Bungel on Thu, 2010-12-23 22:20Im looking at doing a few decent fishing trips away next year when im back on RnR from the mines.
I would like to either drive from perth or fly up and do a week of solid fishing for these beasts LandBasedGame style. Karatha/Port Hedland/ Broom.. i dont care where as long as they hold alot of potential.
Im not after peoples personal spot X's, but just the general area at this stage. From what i know they are targetable from around Wagoe and up. Anywhere south of there and its just not worth it.
Has anyone caught decent GT's at Kalbarri, as thats an area i really would really like to visit.. especially because i can road trip it in a day.
Cheers,
George.

Burns and Trigg beach
Submitted by Mick71 on Mon, 2010-12-20 15:18Hi Guys, and maybe some Gals!!
I am a newbie to fishwrecked, lovely site, and also new to Perth, was in QLD before, so yes I have moved over to the "far" side Luke!!
I have a couple of questions for some fishing around the North side, I have done a bit of fishing at Hillarys, Ocean Reef Marina and Club Capricorn with a bit of luck with Rays (always throw back), Tailor, Salmon and a couple of Whiting.
I was just doing a bit of scouting up and down the coast and wondered if anyone has had any luck at Burns and Trigg beach?
Seems there are a nice couple of shallow reefs to do a bit of drifting, or just to get snagged!!
Another question is if there is anyone who has any luck getting sand worms or pippies?
All the help would be greatly appreciated, or if you have any other suggestions on the north side.
Mick

Walpole
Submitted by mrwinta on Mon, 2010-12-13 05:37Gday... I am going to have 4 days down in Walpole with the missus and child.. We are going to do a fair bit of exploring and 4wding but I would realy like to have a day chasing blue groper.. I plan to use my 12ft 8-10kg x-factor surf rod with Fin Nor 8500 reel (60lb drag), loaded with 50lb fire line and about 4 meters of 150lb Jinki leader, this should have enough stopping power I hope... I heard half crabs are the best bait to use but thats where my reserch ends.... what hooks- 6.0 circle??? what rig- general running rig with spoon weight??? and finaly places to try- has any body fished at Boat Harbour or Big Quarrum (aka Eagles nest I believe)...
any thoughts would be great... Cheers....
P.S. If you know any worth while 4x4 tracks that we could try they would too be appriciated...

Mindarie Rocks
Submitted by jkz1 on Sat, 2010-12-04 13:09
Hi all
My mate and I plan on doing some fishing up at Mindarie. We have always wondered about fishing on the rocks that divide the harbor and the open ocean, I think its called Claytons beach on the other side.
We plan on fishing on the side where it’s open ocean. We will probably use glow in the dark floats to help attract fish as part of our rig but are unsure what the best rig would be as we have never fished there before including hook types as well. If anyone could give us any advice on what’s biting there and if there are any positions which are better than others, rigging etc, it would be a big help for us. After we go I will let everyone know how we went.
Thanks for reading.
Regards
John

Setup for Beach/Rocks fishing
Submitted by Raining Fish on Tue, 2010-11-30 22:18Hey guys,
Looking for some advice on a good set up for beach fishing in terms of Rod/Reel and line loading. Species being targetted would be Mulloway, Salmon, maybe Snapper in the Winter storms, Tailor etc. Not really sure where to start, but would prefer it didn't destroy my piggy bank. Any help or suggestions would be great, my current rod is ok but its very old (my dad's first rod...nearly belongs in an Antique store) and the reel is getting towards its last legs.
Also would take any suggestions on rigs to use for Mulloway or Tailor.
Cheers
John

Land Based Fishing Rigs
Submitted by nightfish on Fri, 2010-11-26 10:57Hi Everybody in land based world. Having been bought up fishing beaches and rock groynes I was always taught to use a running rig. Over the last couple of years I have been using the paternoster rigs with great succes. I have found that the depth of the water is a great indicator as to what style to use, for deep water gutters and rock walls I use paternoster as they keep the bait up in the water column. For shallow water a running rig seems to work.
Any opinions or comments on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hillarys Boat Harbour help
Submitted by KenTse on Tue, 2010-11-23 22:18Hi everyone,
Brand new member here. My name is Ken and I'm from Toronto, Canada.
My sister and I are taking a trip to Perth and we are there for three full days from Dec 3 to Dec 5, 2010. I'm arriving at 5:30am on Dec 3 and I'm leaving at 8am on Dec 6th.
I'm staying at Karrinyup Water Resort and I will be taking a sambo jigging trip with Bluejucie. Unfortunately, I should have read here earlier and booked a trip with Saltwater instead Oh well...live and learn. I hope they can find some fish and find some less sharky spots.
I want to know if anyone can help me with some fishing techniques. I plan to put all my concentration on Hillary Boat Harbour since I only have 3 days to fish (and likely I will only have a few hours each day). I hope to catch something new...anything that I have not caught before. I read there are herring, whiting and maybe bream? Are there any other fish like wrasse and other small reef fish off the jetty?
What are blowies? I assume they are blowfish aka pufferfish?
I would really appreciate as much help as you can give. If you feel like showing a visiting angler a good time, I will gladly jump on any free seat on your boats if you are going out jigging for sambos...mind you I will definitely need to borrow gear and I have not done this before you you will be dealing with a total noob to jigging. I am prepared to pay charters $220 for a seat, so if I come fishing with you, I am prepared to chip in for costs like gas and launch fee if there are any.
On the other hand, if you wish to meet up at the jetty for a bit of landbased fishing, I'd love the opportunity to learn from the locals
If you would like to meet up, please message me your phone number and I can try to give you a ring. I am leaving Toronto tomorrow and I may or may not have internet access for a few days. If I have your number, I can still call you on Dec 3 when I land in Perth
Thanks guys.
Before I leave, I'd like to share a bit of my travels and fishing with you good folks here.
I went to a workshop in France in September and did a little fishing early in the morning and late at night (since we had all day lecture sessions). I caught my first ever European seabass.
Also caught a bunch of these little combers when I took some personal time to travel in Greece and Italy before the workshop.
Last year in September I went to a conference in Georgia, USA. I met up with a friend from an internet fishing board and he took me fishing in the saltwater marsh for red drum.
I drove down to Florida the day after my conference and fished on one of the charter boats for snappers and amberjacks. Here's my first and only amberjack...about 25 inches and 10lbs?
On the way back from Georgia, I stopped in Long Island to visit a friend and we fished Montauk hard for 24 hours straight for striped bass and bluefish (tailor). We found the best fishing for striped bass at 3am about 3km hike away from the main access on the beach. Super trip and one of my most memorable.
Last year I took a trip to Hawaii to visit my grandma and uncles. I have made some friends in Hawaii on a past trip and we meet up to go fishing again. Todd has invited me on his boat a number of times. He taught me a little about fishing the bluewater. We don't always do well, but we got lucky with a 46lb mahimahi in 2009 and a 120lb yellowfin tuna in 2007.
In 2008, I went to British Columbia, Canada to visit an ex-co-worker of mine (now good friend). We took a charter to fish for white sturgeon. Action was very slow but we did catch a nice sturgeon each.
Took three of us to hold this fish for a picture...but it is Kazu's fish and not mine.
Just something completely different...I love icefishing and when I get home from Perth, we should have safe ice by then. Here's some icefishing action from last year.
Lake Whitefish
Lake Trout (always look a fool in these pics LOL)
Just a wee Northern Pike fishing in a pond at my buddy's place.
Anyways, I love sharing pics and fishing experiences. Hope you like the pics. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to show off. I just love to share fishing experience with people I meet.
Hopefully I can maybe meet up with a couple of you while I'm in Perth. I'm there on the weekend so maybe some of you are free
