Where are they biting at the moment

monkey mia report 18 april 2014

A better day.  Double hookup on spanish mackerel but dropped one.   Landed the other.  Using a pilchard giant trembler and a deep diving red head rapala magnum.  Nice sized pinkie and a size black snapper.   Threw back what I think was a 38cm robinson sea bream.

India fishing video of the season 2013/14

 Hi Guys,

Ijust put this vid together of some of the fishing over the last six months in India. Watching it now i wish we had filmed some more of our catches! :) At least it gives some idea of the country we fish on the west coast. Hope you enjoy,

Salmon at Preston

On Tuesday I went down to Preston to finally fish, heading north about 5km along the beach to a likely gutter.
I heard that Bouvards was weeded out so fished the beach halfway from just before midday and was at it until sunset.
I managed to get some live herring and whiting later on for bait.
The highlight was a 4kg plus stray salmon that turned up at 3pm, and it was caught on a mulie.
The salmon went like a train and was a good fight even on 30lb braid given the amount of weed around.
I kept it in the shallows awhile to tire it out but that doesnt work as well for salmon.
So I ended up gritting my teeth and lugging the salmon and a mess of weed out of the water.
A few tailor were caught but only one was size.
I had a couple of decent runs around 4pm but the weed got in the way and I lost them.
The wind and weed picked up at sunset so I called it a day.

Looongtail Tuna

Hey all decided to head out to FFB off woodies last night with my bro. Had a run on a floated mulie within 10 sec of casting but pretty hairy ground and lost the fish and then rig after rig. Decided to go to d9 but didn't have the correct cords so found a little lump, anchored and burleyed hard. Pretty average ground and only pickers smashing our mulies...Pissing me off so decided to catch a herring and put it on whole on the gangs and floated it out...10min later BANG rod goes off like no tomorrow. Thinking ray at first but had head shakes so not ray. It then breached the surface out back of boat and thought hmmm maybe shark. Anyway after getting the anchor up (very wise idea) and the fish taking me all around and under the boat for 25min we finally saw colour. Was thinking sambo the whole time and after another 15-20min we got it close enough to see it was a friggin huge tuna. Playing it slowly there was just no give and take from either side even having reel on pretty much full lock whilst the tuna was doing circle after circle on its side. Anyway finally got it boatside from the front of the boat and my bro gaffed it beautifully through the head. On board massive high fives and much shouting was to be had. We were just amazed at getting my first tuna on a full moon in 7m of water. We bled it and kept it on ice overnight and weighed it the next morning weighing in at 20.1KG and measuring 120cm. Could hardly lift the fish after the fight lol. Sorry pics aren't the greatest.

Sound mullaway

still around. .this one bit smaller than than last 2...14.5 kg

Exmouth / Coral Bay Trip (mini report)

just got back from a week in each of exmouth and coral bay. was essentially a family trip with a few fishing days thrown in. most pics are from gopro footage as we were a bit light on with cameras other than the phone

headed straight out when we got to exmouth and got into some tuna schools on small slices. got  out a bit deeper and got a smallish goldband reasonably quickly, but then got sharked everywhere we went for the rest of the afternoon so headed back. the next day we went out we stayed inside the gulf but pretty quiet sgain, with nothing worth keeping.

so with things not looking goog we tried something different with some shallow trolling and ended up having some fun on little mackies, small cod, a rankin cod (in 5m) some barracuda and a few other bits and pieces. good fun but again not much for the dinner plate.

next time we went out fishing we went to tantas and decided to have our first crack at a billfish. after again getting distracted with tuna, it didn't take long to hook up to the first which went to my mums partner (on his birthday). he fought it for a long time and we eventually landed it despite his lack of fishing experience

we the started trolling again looking for some ground to have a drop on if the weather got better and again it wasn't too long until my rod went off. was a smaller but far livelier black and was great fun to land.

yes he is upside down, and yes he jumped from in front of my brother who was trying to land him. for reference, it is 4m from where my brother is standing to the back of the boat. big jump...video is here youtu.be/orMg5H-Qhpk

so we were now a bit over an hour in to our billfishing and had landed two blacks. we also had two sick deckies as it was prettty rough, so we decided to troll back towards the reef to have some lunch and calm down a bit. then the other rod went off with a nice dollie for my brother somewhere around the 50m mark.

so that was another first as none of us had ever caught one. the weather didn't let up so we headed back early to the gulf and had a quick troll where we picked up a trout which was cooked whole that night to go with the dollie. we tried one more time out of exmouth but despite good fish shows there was nothing happening.

after that we packed up and went to coral bay. we only headed out once but it was a great day. beautiful conditions and i got to take the wife out as we had a babysitter lined up. another big thanks to my brother for keeping the sharks busy whilst i landed my spanglie

the wife getting onto something that looked and sounded far more exciting than it was...

and finally, the quality coming to the surface without getting devoured by a hungry shark. all ended up with a few reds (this being the best) and a couple of spanglies which were all of good size.

was a great trip for both a bit of fishing as well as for the family. long way to tow a big boat but worth it in the end. and the jeep didn't even break down once.

p.s. cheers to those on this forum that offered advice (i wont name them as i don't want them inundated with pm's but you know who you are).

p.p.s. also saw the usual dolphins, turtles etc but had my first ever sighting of a free jumping malin (3 different times) as well as a dugong

monkey mia report april 2014

Left friday, overnight in northampton. Arrived and set up saturday.  More setup sunday, launch the boat and get the mooring setup.  A push bike repair for the ten yr old son and a lost mobile phone of the 11 yr old daughter's friend meant no fishing yesterday. Phone found and handed in thankfully :)

Keep hearing that fish are heard to find this year.  Something about the hot summer has killed off a lot of the seagrass and taken away the natural hiding habitat of the smaller fish so the bigger ones have moved out to deeper water???

Got out for a fish today.  Out early trolling, no luck.  Tried some bottom bouncing at some known spots, and no keepers.  Trolled again, nothing.

One last go with the jigs for me, bait and trusty handline for the wife.  It was after three in the afternoon when we started our last drift.  And then, bam! In ten minutes we had two pink snapper in the esky, released another couple just undersize, one black snapper in the esky (all caught by the missus on the trusty handline)  and then I contributed with a 60cm estuary cod.  And they went off the bite as quick as they came on.  I reckon it coincided with the slack water, but i'm no expert...

No photos, sorry but it all happened so quick....

Maybe photos tomorrow.

Metro salmon

Got a 5 kg salmon behind 5 fathom bank yesterday evening a very good sign for this metro season

FAD Trip

I took advantage of the good conditions on Saturday for my first trip out to the FADs.

We got up at 4am, in the water by 5:30 and at the Fremantle Sail Club FAD around 7 am. We couldn't find the thing at first, it wasn't where our plotter was telling us, but luckly there was another boat out there which we followed to it. I was surprised how fast the current moves out there. Without any wind, our boat was drifting at about 2 knots.

We could see the dollies swimming under the boat on the first pass and had a few follows on our soft plastics, but no bites initially. On the second pass my mate dropped a mullie over the side and managed to hook up to one.

On the pass after that I managed to hook onto one with my soft plastic.

There were lots of similar sized dollies in the water following the boat, but they weren't that interested in anything we threw at them. Lots of follows but no bites.

At about 9am they shut down completely and disappeared.

My friend also decided to drop a bait down 250 meters to the bottom to see what was there. After about 10 minutes of manually winding in, he pulled in this kifejaw.

After that we headed over to the club marine FAD, but there didn't seem to be any fish around that one.

We spent the rest of the day bottom bashing around rottnest without much luck. The weather was fantastic, no wind until about 3pm.

Unusual capture or no?

Caught one of these guys fishing for herring off woodman point. after about half an hour searching through the species id guide i belive its a senator wrasse, is this and unsusual capture for the area or they pretty common around? was only a little guy bout 25cm so he went back ok after this quick photo. otherwise ok trip, managed to land 3 herring between 21 and 26cm and hooked a few more but all managed to throw the hooks doing spins and jumps, which i was never able to witness presviously having only caught them off the beach. a bit more respect for the humble herring after today, bit more of a challenge off the rocks than i expected, despite the massive amount of them in the water around the berley had a hard time landing them. so at the very least it was a great learning experience with different rigs and styles and some herring fillets that im having a go at pickling.

12/04/14 Mindarie day of recaptures

Managed a days fishing in perfect weather conditions yesterday. We skipped the usual whiting safety net and headed out to try and get a few table fish. I hit a few favourite lumps along the way and also found a few new ones with fish on them, so I was a happy camper.

First fish on deck was a tagged Dhuie I had caught in September last year. I will have to review my data to find out a bit more about it, but essentially it had only grown around 0.5cm in that time.

Close up of tag with weed algae build up.

Close up with weed / aglae cleared off.

We managed a few good Blackarse including this one by Tim.

We hit another lump and I recaptured anothr fish. This time a Breaksea cod. (note the tag is missing about 1cm off the end so what nipped that off I have no idea???

Apart from an assortment of Baldies, Pinkies, and 7 dhuies of which I tagged a few more, I managed one half decent Dhuie of around 70cm. All in all a great day on the water but it was difficult to get a consistent bite going and the bigger fish (whilst cklearly showing on the sounder) just weren't interested.

woodman/asi

hey all, anything getting caught during the day around woodman point or the asi atm? was planing on heading down tomoro but prior commitments mean cant stay late, latest bout 4pm. was just hoping for some herring or skippy would be nice, light gear, burley etc.

cheers

Niko

Coupla kakkas!

 Shallow dive NOR this morning.

Light winds, great vis, not a lot of swell and heaps of crays around. Can't ask for much more...

cheers

EUROPE TRIP (picture heavy)

Hey Guys and Gals i just thought id throw up a few pics from my recent Europe trip for those that are interested. Some people think im crazy going to Europe and all i wanted to do is fish, but thats me i love it. I do it for work and i do it for fun cant get enough!! So every chance i got while i was there i tryed to have a fish, didnt do a whole lot but as much as i could.

-First pics are ice fishing in Lapland (most northern part of Finland). Great fun we caught a mixture of Redfin, Roach and another type but i forgot the name.

-Next is a charter i took from Brighton in the UK. The water was really dirty and fishing was hard but managed 9 Pollock between 10 people and i was lucky enough to get one. Also a Submarine we saw while out on the sea.

-Next is stream fishing in Bath UK. Found this little stream at the back of the caravan park we stayed in so i riged up my 2ft ugly stick thati had in my backpack and caught quite a few Chub and a couple of Brown Trout on live worms.

-Next I went fishing with my misses uncle in Newcastle UK. It was the second day of the rainbow trout season and water was still a bit cold but i landed a nice Blue Trout which i was even happier with because it was a new species for me.

-Next is Pike fishing in Headford Ireland. We fished hard with lures but all the fish for the day came from dead baits. Caught 4 for the day and I was lucky enough to get one over the magic 1m mark.

-Lastly we stopped in Singapore on the way home and i hooked up with a few locals and we went Peacock Bass fishing. Great fun treking threw the jungle and throwing lures for these beautiful fish. Tryed for snakeheads but no luck.

-Also in Singapore prawn fishing and Patin fishing. Prawn fishing was more of a drinking session although we did manage a couple of KGs of prawns which was real good. Patin fishing is like a game, you fish with a tiny fiberglass rod and a shortish lengh 4lb line tied to the tip. It costs $5 per rod and if the line snaps you have to buy a new rod to keep fishing. Its extremely difficult but eventually got 2 fish from 5 rods.

Hope you all enjoy the photos..

Cheers Belly

Heading down to Busselton...

after not going fishing for many months.  I'll be there at Easter.   Can anyone local tell me if there is anything special at the Jetty?  I've beeing going there for years so will just take gear for tailor, bread and butter fish and squid unless there happens to be a mass bonito or tuna outbreak or something going on (I wish).

Probably take a beach rod as well and might have a go at some salmon if they're there.

Thanks

Cam

1st time jigs Vs long time bait

 G'day all,

Headed out today with the brother in law (The Baiter). Been a while since we got out for a bash, as last trip out the motor got a bit warm for my liking. Anyway after a few k spent getting everything sorted we headed out to the 40m mark off Mandurah.

Got myself a nice Demon Blood 64CJ off a fellow FW member on B-S/S/T. and put it with my Stradic 6000fj as a beginners jig set up. Decided today was the day to try the metals all day. Well not quite all day.... but gave it a good crack.

Was pretty slow for us out there this morning. Got started in 39m and ended up with a NW Blowie for the baiter and a very sick looking Pirate Jig for me. I swapped over to this (Can't remember what it was called. Got it frow Oceanside)

We then headed a bit further out, to around 42m. I kept working the jig from the back of the boat with little success and Doug nailing a lovely BB. I changed tack and made my way to the bow. Was watching a Fishing WA show the other week and Ryan was saying about working the jigs as vertical as possible. The result was almost instant, I cast updrift let it hit the bottom, a few inexprerienced jigs later and I'm on!! Only a little fella, but pretty happy to get a Dhu on a real steel jig and not a Pirate Jig p.s(Nothing wrong with Pirate Jigs I just wanted to get one on the other types)  probably around 40-48 cm didn't bother measuring as it was early days. Kept working the jig most of the morning for a nice Nannygai. Doug got another smaller BB. Just after lunch time and another move I hooked a nice fish on the jig but after a short tussle I dropped it. Bummer it felt like a nice Dhu.

It went quiet on the jigs after that and Doug had lost a really good fish on the bait. So I let myself get lured over to the bait. I rigged up a snelled Herring on a drift bait, and sent it down. As it was getting close to the bottom it got nailed. I don't know if it was a big Dhu or a Sambo but after a few great runs everything went limp. and worse of all up came the pig tails. Back to the knot books (anyone know a good snell knot)

Back around for another drift and this time Dougs rod loads up with another good fish, this time everything stays connected and up pops this beauty!

When we got home this buck went just under 10 kg's.

So all in all a great day on the water. The Jigs got enough hits on a quiet day to keep me more than interested. But baits still won.

Any jig guru's keen to give me a tutorial around Mandurah feel free to pm. Still finding spots.

Cheers

Chris

Mixed bag NOR last Friday

Went out on a solo mission of Hillarys last Friday. Initially hung in close just behind the 3 mile waiting for the wind to die down, the highlight was a nice 45cm KG from my KG spot. Also got some skippy, tarwhine, sand whiting, a well undersize dhu which swam away strongly and a few undersize pinkies which seem to be around in plague proportions at the moment.

Once the wind died down headed further out for a jig on lumps north of Rotto. Was a slow day out there. I was plagued by Sergent Bakers and Footballer Sweep - given their size I'm surprised how many of them I get on jig. I did manage my PB flatty though - a 58cm Blue Spot which hit a jig on the fall, a new species for me on jig.

I did some experimenting with rigging jigs with a bottom hook, interestingly most of the Sergent Bakers were hooked on the bottom hook. Late in the day I had a big hit on a 160gm Shout ShabShab but didn't hook up. I didn't have the bottom hook rigged on the jig and I reckon it cost me a good fish.

Overall not a bad day out on the water.

Latest fishing trip to the west coast of India. barramundi, big mangrove jacks and a few monkeys :)

Hi Guys, It's been a while since I posted so I thought I would put up a few images of my latest trip to India. I've been out again on the west coast which is called the Konkan coast. It is probably one of the most interesting stretches of coast on the sub continent because a mixture of terrain. There is everything from decent estuaries, rock fishing and good surfcasting as well as some good fishing up the rivers themselves.

I bought a little van a couple of years ago which makes exploring much easier compared to a bike or by public transport and this trip we really did see and camp in some beautiful places. The coast we fish is a little way north of Goa and generally there are not too many people In terms of India. There is a fair bit of pressure from commercial fishermanbut this is mainly offshore with boats targetting spaniards, various other species and prawns. Inshore there are still many places that haven't been screwed.

The main two species I target are Barramundi and mangrove jacks. These are the commonest species in the area and if you know your stuff there can be some world class light tackle fishing from the rocks and estuaries. Some of you guys might remember my previous posted and some of these fish:) There are also Gts, cod, queenfish, spanish mackeral and cobia about and these we usually target from a boat but to be fair until i have a decent boat with electrics I prefer the landbased fishing and casting lures from my kayak which can also be very productive. Generally the fishing is pretty good if you know your stuff but I can imagine if all the commercial boats caught fire it wouldn't be a bad thing. The local fish market shows what can be caught if you know the offshore marks and the fish out there are very similar to the north of australia, with huge golden snappers, black jews, speckled snappers and queenies often coming in, all of good size.

This trip we really tried to get to know a couple of hundred kms of coast well which was great. I did a fair bit of snorkelling during the day (when the fishing isn't great) and often found myself swimming through large shoals of mangrove jack of anything up to 6-7kg and pod of 5-10 barramundi ranging from 4-10kg. Some of you guys would be thinking this is spearfishing heaven but in India its not really a very popular pastime and is really frowned upon by the locals. probably for the best really because it wouldn't take long for the fish to be wiped out going by the areas they live in.

A very memorable trip we did around new year was to take the kayaks and head up one of the large rivers that empty into the arabian sea. We spent six nights in total to reach the top and return and all in all it was a very pleasant way to spend just over a week. we caught a fair few mangrove jacks and early on new years day i had a cracker barramundi; my first in freshwater in India, which put up a super fight. I couldn't have thought of a better way to start the new year!

On this trip I also taught my girlfriend Aurelie to fish and she did pretty well considering it was more or less new to her. First trip for her was to the rocks on near full moon and she managed to hook and nearly land a big mangrove jack around 5kg (hook popped as we were ready to land it) and then she went on to get stuck into the barra. It was great to see as she was a still a little unsure what to do with such big fish. the first barra smashed a bomber and proceded to jump and cartwheel around 25 yards out the hooks feel out. The second she hooked was a solid fish of between 8-9kg which really made her scream when it started jumping and running hard but again it got lucky and threw the hooks. The third one was smaller but not so lucky and we managed to land it! while that was going on I managed to just hook and lose two!

I've written a few posts on my blog about the trip for anyone that would like to read more. one post is in a diary format. www.worldbiker.blogspot.com

Right onto the photos...

Spot with super potential. i could see a good shoal of fish from my view point and also some turtles swimming about

New year morning barramundi. a good fish and my first Indian freshwater barramundi

deserted coast north of where we live. Big Gts and sharks patrol here! And apparently tigers. After camping a few nights the police turned up and declared that it was unsafe to camp there due to the tigers and snakes and foxes!! oh and crazy locals! Hmmm I can see that if something happened it would be mean much work for them..In Indian camping is a bit of an alien concept in many areas so we olbliged and moved to a new spot. To argue would have been futile!

before the police chased us off we watched around 25 local guys hunting this fellow in  a small forested valley set just back from the beach. the hunt went on for quite a few hours! We watched from the valley top until we decided they were hunting their shadow and so went to the van to cook and make coffee. 15 minutes later an indian came flying out of the bushes with his ancient bamboo spear and made a run for it. Seconds later a shot rang out fiftteen yards away and the wild boar was dead.

Aurelie's pb Barramundi. Not bad on 4kg line :)

Noel and Graham came to visit with a friend from further down the coast and managed to land this lovely malabar rock cod. happy days!

My friend Ashok with a brace of good Indian Barramundi. The moon was up and a pod moved in and it was a bite a cast but for some reason only on ashoks rod!!

One more decent barra for Ashok

a decent beach with no people. Nice place to spend some hours :)

One of the better trevally from the trip. this was at the start when a friend from uk joined. after this I didn't do too much popping.

Double hook up on Gts from the rocks. James had never caught a gt before so the sight of a hungry pack chasing our poppers down was something special. we kept a couple and cooked them in the coals later on.

Rapan net; The locals often put a large 'u' shaped net off the beach for sardines and usually they get a good haul of up to a ton. But surprisinly there are not too many pelagics chasing the sards. However they did get a 65kg cobia in this net a few months ago and i saw a 35kg gt pulled out a couple of weeks back

Nice little GT on the popper.

And one more

James first Indian barra. He caught this on a very hard night when we thought there was no chance of a fish! not bad for a first attempt.

I managed to get a couple of barra on the fly. It's something new for me and also for the indian coast as i believe no one or very few people have fly fished the konkan coast. there is some good potential and i look forward to getting a big barra on the fly

A good estuary barra for aurelie towards the end of the trip.

And a super hard fighting mangrove jack for Aurelie on a night when the fish were climbing up our rods :)

Camping with friends after fishing

Good brace of fish. On nearly every cast either a jack of barra tried to eat my lure and they were even taking soft plastics on the drop. good fun until the tide came up and i had to make a break for higher ground

we spent aurelie's birthday camped on this beautiful beach and didn't see another soul. we did however see fresh leopard footprints but lived to tell the tail! a few days after this we met the main Forest Department boss who oversees the wildlife in the district. he told us the leopards that live here are classed as 'Civilised' and don't eat people. I knew before i met him they don't usually eat people but now i'm fully at ease!

Nice jack on lure off the beach

Aurelie and her pb mangrove jack

Kayaking up the river at new years; early morning

One more solid mangrove jack on the lure from the estuary

Lunch stop before fishing :)

One of my last barra of the trip. It was great fight on 4kg line with strong current. I'll remember that fish for a while :)

One of our neighbours :)

Ok that's it for now. Hope you guys enjoy the photos. i might put a few more up later if I have time. I had a quick look through the forum and it seems some great fish are getting caught on the west of oz. I miss it a lot and might have to come visit again soon if i get the chance. Tightlines everyone, Scott

17.6kg Mulloway in Cockburn Sound

Good mate, Manie Bekker and I decided to do a short session hunting Mulloway in Cockburn Sound on Friday night. We do not normally chase Mulloway in a Waxing Crescent with an outgoing tide, but we were desperate to get a bait in the water.

We launched from Woodman Point just as the sun was setting and after a short 5.5km trip found a bommie in 10m indicating good fish holding close to it. We dropped the anchor up wind from the bommie and within minutes of burleying were catching an assortment of baitfish. We filled the live well with Herring, Snoek, Butterfish, Trumpeter, Bream and even a Chopper Tailor.

Manie attached a Herring to two 4/0 hooks on a 60lb trace with the other end driven by a Penn 850 filled with 40 lb braid. At around 8 PM we hooked a Snoek which managed to pick up Manie's live bait line. While I was trying to untangle the lines Manie's 40lb braid suddenly started pulling through my fingers. We quickly cut off the Snoek trace and Manie set the hook into the fleeing fish. He immediately donated about 30m of line from the Penn as the fish dashed for it's freedom. Another 10 minutes later and a couple of short bursts, we managed to pick up the fish's number plate - a decent Mulloway of over a meter. After carefully slipping the landing net under the fish and bringing it aboard we started celebrating. Manie's Mulloway measured a magical 120 cm and a mass of 17.6 kg, beating my previous best Cockburn Sound Mulloway of 113cm.

Unfortunately the fish was hooked well within its gut and we were unable to release it as it had lost a lot of blood.

At about 10 PM the Southerly started picking up and after I lost a decent fish we decided to call it a night. We look forward to our next session on this wonderful fishery.

Salmon Madness

For a change of pace I decided to take the boat out today with a mate and get stuck into the mega schools of salmon that are holding up off Bunkers.

With up to 40 other boats in the area it bordered on the ridiculous at times but with at least 4 different schools it wasn't hard to find enough room to land a few.

Our rough tally for the morning was well over 30 with numerous other fish lost due to using stupidly light gear (4lb)

Maiden voyage

I finally lashed out and bought a Kayak. The main purpose is for the family with the wife and two young girls but since it came with rod holders I thought I better take it for a fish he he he.

The trip was windy and rainy and you'd call it pretty miserable but I still managed to Christen the new Yak with a nice little Barra around 65cm. It's a start.

The best thing about this Kayak is I got two inbuilt rod holders, two adjustable ones, two of those Deluxe seats that can go for $100 each plus two detachable paddles all for $694 delivered. Can't argue with that.

Jindalee to Lancelin

Not a lot to report, walked from Jindalee beach to Lancelin over the weekend, stayed pretty much on the beach the whole way. Good walk but not a lot of fish seen. weed conditions were varying from heavy to none and some good gutters between Seabird and Ledge. Saw heaps of campers/fishos on the way, anyone remember the two blokes on foot ?
