Me mate has had 2 Mako's eye ball him while diving the back of the 5 this year.
Big Black Eyes and curious he said , the big toothy criters weren't even detured
by a Shark Shield and he had to poke them away with his Gun...

Personally!

I dive at 5 fathom a lot, it's like all spots as far as a potential shark cruising around but far and few between IMO

If your a spero then you've got more chance of a visit, a floating fish line will help seperate you. I've got a Shark Sheild for diving in northern waters like Exmouth. My mates that have used them a lot swear by them!

You have more chance getting run over by a Holden Vectra driven by a lesbian than eaten by a shark whilst diving the 5.
There are sharks everywhere including the sound and especially the river.
They say for every one you see 20 see you!

Yeh agree Matt, ppl say to me you dive out there your mad, i say you drive on the road your mad.....they look at me like what the hell do you mean

Yep more chance of a car accident but that doesn't stop us from driving, dive safe and respect the water and you'll be fine!

Shark Shields?

Sun, 2007-11-25 00:52

I am also a diver here in South Africa and there are many sharks here, but if you look them in the eye and jerk your body unnattually they usually swim away, but what and how do these Shark Shields work?

Sharks ??

Sun, 2007-11-25 07:14

You mean all this time ive been diving there Sharks have been in the water ??
Bloody hell im not going to do that again !!

In all seriousness I have only come across a couple of sharks and have never had a problem.
(seals in the other hand can be painfull)
The experts out there say that a shark does not see us as food once we are at there level
but while we are at the surface we look a bit like a seal and thats usually when the problems happen. Also as Ryan said If you are going to spear use a floating fish line as holding onto the bait can be frought with danger if a shark launches at it.

As far as free diving I don't know as I have never tried it but if you are competent then the 5 should not be a problem. I have met blokes up at Steep Point freediving, now that is a place I would be worried about sharks.

Its Dive Time !!

You wouldn't have wanted to

Sun, 2007-11-25 08:01

You wouldn't have wanted to be swimming yesterday where me and Sherbs were fishing as there was a hungry mako which would have bitten anything in the water.
Ask Sherb as it even ate his sinker and that was after his fish and hooks.
