Transducer Ticking

Hey guys,

I recently acquired a navman 6600 off mightymouse and fixed it into my new boat. My boat is a small centre console and the transducer mounting plate was a bit on the small side, so i reversed the bracket on the the transducer to fit on the plate...perfect.

I took the boat out on wednesday, all systems go....stopped the boat to do some squidding. And there was this constant ticking took me awhile to figure out what it was, but it turned out to be the transducer! My dads has a furuno and that doest tick!

Is this normal? or have i done something i shouldnt have?

is there antying i can do that can stop it, gets rather annoying.

Hopefully someone one this forum who has a navman sounder can tell me if they have the same issue/problem

Thanks

Tick.

All transducers tick

A quick lesson in Sonar.

The tick you hear is how Sonar works, by sending a sound (tick) and measuring how fast and how strong it comes back.

The faster it comes back the shallower the water, the stronger it comes back the harder the ground.

You may find that the reason you can hear yours and not your days is that yours is stronger ie Navman may be 500kw and the Furuno if it is older may only be 300kw.

It may also be the different hull material (Glass or Ali) or how close your hear is to the Transducer (Is your dads boat larger?)Wink

In short be happy with the Ticking it means that it is working.Laughing

Have a great day.

Ali or FG Jorn?

Fri, 2008-10-10 13:12

As the guys have said, all transducers are suppossed to tick. I've seen posts where people that have ali hulls hear a louder tick because there's a form of resonance through the hull.

thanks for the reply

its so bloody annoying tho...i guess i'll learn to live with it

i got a 4.75m Ali, my dads boat is a 7.5m ali.

My dad has a furuno 585 and i swear it doesnt tick hahah maybe it doest work...but we do fish deeper in it which is probably why.

i thought i might of damaged a line or something but im glad its "normal"

Jorn, dunno if this info

Jorn, dunno if this info helps. I had two fiberglass boats one was a 17footer and the other a 14footer. I had two different models of Eagle sounder but it was ticking on the 14footer and was not on the 17 (probably tickeing as well just not noticeable). Probably the water depth and size of the boat made a difference but as long as it's working, we'll just have to live with the tick.

Distance

Probably because of the difference from your head to the Transducer.

You ears are a lot further away on a bigger boat

Plus when the boat has stopped a larger boat will sit deaper in the water so therefore the transducer will be further under the water and so it will be quieter.

Have a great day.

tick..bloody tick

Fri, 2008-10-10 20:15

I have a ali boa tand a  navman 4500 and it ticked as well. I mentioned it on this forum before and someone said to put some rubber under the mounts. Since i have done that its no way as bad as it was before..i have an eagle fishfinder as well, but it dosnt make a ticking noise.

Since i have noticed this noise it got me wondering what the bloody fish hear under the boat..so these days i always turn it off if im not watching it !

Changing the colour of the screen is pretty easy. under the menu you should have an option called pallet. and you can change from white, blue and black.

There is other stuff you can do aswell, with Ascope and Bottom lock and setting the proportions of the screen etc. Makes it easier finding fish on the bottom. Our catch rate went up heaps when We started using these features.

Had the same problem with my Navman in my Ali but after fitting the transducer to a teflon mount (chopping board 10 mm thick) with a little gasket of sikaflex  the ticking went away!

It did the same with mine

It did the same with mine and with the Furuno you don't seem to hear it but let me tell you that when I was moored over at rotto I accidently put my foot under my transducer in a foot of water and almost shit myself as pulses started pumping through my foot!I thought I had trod on 15 flounder as it was a shit of a feeling.

I wouldn't have wanted the gain cranked up in 50khz
