Why the Long Face

Did my first bit of bottom-bouncing today here in Pohnpei. More like cliff-face bouncing as the edge after reef break drops away from the surface to 500m+ in less than 80m covered on the surface. Didn't do that well today but managed my first ever Longface Emperor.

yeah the bottom topography
yeah the bottom topography in places like that don't leave much ground for bottom bogging.
Nice pic by the way.

Cheers
Yep Pohnpei is a bit rock jutting up from the ocean floor. This makes the currents very strong and the wind (at this time of year) makes the bottom fishing even harder.

seen the long nose before
seen the long nose before but that ones a bit different. if bottom bashing is hard , maybe stick to the trolling. at least you got out there and gave it a go. what is the diving like over there ?

Diving is world class - the water is classed as 'gin-clear'. You can see fish/coral from the surface in 50m of water.
Don't mind the trolling and I've caught some good fish so far but I love the jigging and bottom bouncing too much to give it up for three years. I'm hitting the boss up for a new sounder and transducer; if that get's up off the ground hopefully the results in this department will be a lot better.

You should try popping
You should try popping Soupster - structure like that sounds perfect for it. Alot more fun and visual than jigging.
You never know what you can catch with a popper - coral trout, wahoo, dogtooth, longnose emperors, cod, green jobfish, even amberjack and yes, I know of a red emperor that was caught on popper.

Popping
It's definately on the agenda Kasey. The weather hasn't been suitable to get the boat in close enough to the reef since I arrived. June thru Sep is summer here bring the calm conditions and I'll be casting until my arms/shoulders/back hurt so much I cant pop any more.
