You need 40oz Sunset Tackle release weight to get a descent barotrauma fish down IMO, I personally dont muck around, if anything I cant wait for the heaveir versions to be made so sambo's & big dhufish get released with ease!

Yeh!

Thu, 2007-07-05 11:09

I do like what I see and yeh if it's big like you've mentioned then all good, the market price for the Sunset Tackle/Original release weight has come down to cost price basically, $10.95 on average, yeh no money made but agree with Wally's push to help the fish so yeh cheap as!

Thu, 2007-07-05 12:43

sunset sinkers is getting dearer and dearer from what i hear, im thinking that if the barb was on a 45deg angle instead of a right angle it might make retrieval out of the fishes jaw a little easier but we'll test the current design when we get some decent weather again

But then agian staying connected may become an issue, may have to weld a tack on to stop you line from slipping off

IMO!

Sunset Sinkers maybe more expensive than some but the release weight is the opposite....cheap as. This is the original by Garry Lilley/Westag/ANSA/Recfishwest but Jason (Sunset Sinkers) has modified it to make it better and for the fishery sake Jason (manufacturer) and selected tackle stores have dropped the price so the original release weight is only $10.95 and it originally sold for up to $25

It's all about making it cheap so all boats/anglers would/should buy it and use it, you just attach a swivel and clip to it and your away

Nealez 25 bucks is a rip

Thu, 2007-07-05 13:42

Nealez 25 bucks is a rip off, and anyone selling these things at this price is a parasite

Like ryan said they are made at cost from sunset sinkers. Tackleworld and Ocean side are selling them at cost. I urge everyone to buy them from them $10.99 and $8.99

25 bucks you friggn kidding, I could make something similar to that for under 10 bucks

Easy 32 ounce snapper lead. 10/0 hook 1 stainless bolt, the biggest crimp you can find ( cut in half) so it can slide up the hook ( grind/ file off the barb) one quality swivel. bingo you have a release weight.

we made a big one to take to Dampier and it took no more then 10 mins. 2 back to back 3lb dive weights. 12/0 hook that sits between the two weights, this bolts all together top and bottom with the top passing threw the hook, biggest crimp so it can slide over the hook, swivel and bingo.

25 bucks is disgraceful, we are trying to save fish not discourage people from buying them, as I said parasites.

Wally

edit I am being nice too. this really pisses me off, we need to get every undersize fish back . especially now, undersize jewies  should be treated like gold, and these guys are not helping at all.

I take back my good on them comment as well

Wally, the release weight is

Fri, 2007-07-06 12:58

Wally, the release weight is produced localy in Bunbury and the cost price is honestly only a touch under the $25 asking price. Basically the product in question was shown to those in the shop and an order was placed, unaware that the cost price was far higher than other products on the market. Once these have sold through, they will be stocking the Sunset Sinker range and selling them at the same price as those tackle stores you mentioned do.

To call them parasites is unfair and uncalled for, as you have no idea what the product in question has cost them. Be assured, they are very much practicing and promoting catch and release too.

Sorry too upset you nealez,

Sorry too upset you nealez, but mate they can tell you what they make them for and what they really make them for, the ones at sunset have the same sort of bent stainless hook and lead, now they wouldn't have to have a special mold, it would be the one for the 32 ounce snapper lead, Jason buys the hook for $3.30 or there abouts and then the cost of the lead and time to pour it etc, he sells them for $7.80 and $8.99, you go figure

again I apologize if you are offended but they are taking it for a ride, unfair mate, nup. believe me mate there has been more money lost on this product then you care to imagine from one guy in particular who has and will never receive one zac back, all we want is to get people to use it. this price is scaring people away IMO

Wally, I raised the issue

Fri, 2007-07-06 15:41

Wally, I raised the issue with the boys and they produced the invoice and it's all fair dinkum. It would seem that perhaps the supplier is the one making some money on it???

As for the moulds, they are hand made and I have seen them for myself.

You said it wouldn't be a special mould, just a standard 32oz snapper lead mould. If you know where to get a 32oz mould, let me know as I've been on the look out for one for ages, so have a few of my mates!

Nealez well I take back my comment that the mob selling them for 25 bucks is a parasite the mob making them however are parasites Can you pm the name for me

As for the 32ounce mould ask Sunset sinkers when you or anyone else that want to stock release weights. I reckon he could sort that out for ya

How long a line do you folks

How long a line do you folks put on the release weight?  Could someone give me a % in terms of depth estimate please.

All the way

Wed, 2007-11-14 19:45

All the way back to the bottom Alfred. Normally just clip it to the bottom of your bottom bouncing rig or you can set up a handline or another rod ready with the release weight on it for imediate use.

Could just as well use a 24

Thu, 2007-11-15 07:32

Could just as well use a 24 ounce snapper sinker attach a large snap swivel then either use a stainless rivet or stainless srew drill a hole and use a mustad live bait hook due to the large eye easy home made release weight
