Yellowtail Kingie near Rotto

I decided to have a quick fish in conditions that I normally would not go out in. Mate Nick and I launched at six from Woodies and made our way to a bommie near Rotto. We dropped the anchor in rough conditions and set up a burley trail. About an hour into our fish my Shimano Tekota 500 attached to the Shimano T-Curve Jig-200 made a click, click sound to indicate a query at the other end. The business end was loaded with 60lb floro with two snelled 7/0 Gamakatsu hooks. Attached to the hooks was the favourite bait for this water - a whole scalie.

As I lifted the rod I could feel the fish pick up the slack and ever so lightly tug as it swam off with the bait in its mouth. I set the hook and hung on for what was arguably the greatest fight which I have had in my 30 years of fishing. The fish managed to pick up the other lines before Nick had a chance to pull them all out. It also took me down deep on two occasions where I could feel the resistance of the 50lb Power Pro braid as it ran across the reef below. Yes you read it right 50lb - you can not go lighter on these dirty wrestlers of the ocean.

After a good 10 minute fight we eventually lifted the 120cm Yellowtail Kingfish onto the boat. A quick measure and a couple of photos and it was released to fight another day. I have lost my fair share of what I believe to be YTKF in this area. This new rig is sure to see the tables turn. The next goal is to upgrade this new PB.

Better pull

Sun, 2015-03-29 21:47

Although Sambos give a decent pull - pound for pound, the YTK is the powerhouse

I have noticed they are alot leaner over this side of Australia. They seem to have freckles on them as well.

Well done mate

I lost one about the same size at the net close to Rotto a few months ago it was the fight of my life for 10 15 mins. Are they no good on the chew?  I have lost a couple of others same place and the braid snapped at the swivel? Do you use a wind on leader and bimini?

No good for the chew

Smaller YTK under 4kg are apparently ok to eat. Personally I prefer catching this species for the fight and then release. May keep the odd Pink, Dhu, Blackarse or Baldie if the stock at home is running low. Otherwise it is catch and release.

Prefer to run the leader directly from the braid with the hooks tied at the end of the leader thereby eliminating swivels and more knots. The fewer joins the lesser the risk of loosing a good fish. Check out the "GT knot" on YouTube, the strongest known knot to join braid to mono.

Decent pedigree

Looking at your profile it seems that you have caught a couple of decent fish. Is the fish in your profile pic a YTK and if so where did you catch it?

Yellow fin tuna, caught less than 5 km from a well known Perth metro marina.

Well done great catch. Been having a go at the school around Mindarie for the last 6 months on fly. Hooking them in shallow water is one thing, stopping is another.

Hard enough

Mon, 2015-03-30 21:07

It is difficult enough trying to land them on med/heavy gear - would be a mission on fly.

Nikon D3000

Mon, 2015-03-30 21:06

No fancy camera - I use the Nikon D3000. I do however run my photos through Adobe Lightroom to get rid of unwanted shadows and to enhance (naturalise) the colours.
