"Yamaha blasts the E-Tec Myth into the weeds"
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 2007-10-31 14:23
Okay, the argument has gone on for a while now ie 4 stroke versus 2 stroke and Etec versus the world!
I'm a Suzuki 4 stroke outboard owner and rate my motor, economical, reliable and quiet.
The Etec debate has rattled Yamaha by the looks and they've done their own testing and the write up's called "Yamaha blasts the E-Tec Myth into the weeds".........wasn't a suprise to me as i've always stated the clever marketing sounds just too good!
Interesting read, E-tec marketing people will be working a few extra hours me thinks...hehehe

Yep, at this stage in time
Yep, at this stage in time you can't make a 2 st motor perform at 4st standards.

Outboards
I am a marine mechanic so I consider myself to know a little bit about outboards. As for the new generation direct injection 2 strokes, I will admit i dont know anything about e-tecs. I work for a mercury dealership and know a fair bit about the optimax. Nearly all these 2 strokes are 3 star emission the same as most 4 strokes, more economical, more power, the downside is they are a little louder at WOT.

Been talking to a mechanic
And his advice was Etecs are using "gimicks" and clever marketing as said before to sell their engines.

gimicks
Evinrude, Johnson have always made good adverts. As I said dont know alot about e-tec, I have seen under the cowl of one, I believe they are still running the same injection system as the FICTS, which were a bit of a disaster, thats what sent OMC down the drain before bombidier bought them out.I have spoken to a few other mechanics who have worked on they and complained about injector problems. Also im sure 3 year no service is for freshwater use only.

andy, took a test run on a
andy, took a test run on a 650 northshore running an etec, 1100kg boat that had 6 blokes on board and was only doing 4000rpm at 27 knots, an equivalent 4 stroke would be working alot harder to do that. WOT was 42 knots at 5800rpm.
was very quiet and no smell of oil .
was quite impressed.

Holth I would be interested
Holth I would be interested in seeing what sort of economy you would get off the etec, as we have the same boat but are running a 225 4 stroke honda, and a 30-35 mile trip would cost about $45 in adverage conditions.

oil smell
With the oil smell complaint that will have something to do with the engine in run in mode. We have 170hrs on our optimax and have no smell or smoke at all.

was a good read. not much in
was a good read. not much in it as far as performance went .i was not surprised by the 4 stroke being better on fuel than the twos. i still like the etecs though.
always in it just the depth that varies

chezza we aim to please here
Here are some independented numbers for you
"bass&walleye " conducted a seriesof test on the following (test boat lowe180)
Mercury Optimax 225,200,90
Yamaha 225,200
e-tec 225,200,9o
225hp
Merc 6.2mpg
Yamaha 5.8mpg
e-tec 5.00 mpg
200hp
merc 5.8mpg
yamaha 5.5
e-tec 4.4
90hp
merc 7.7mpg
e-tec 6.7mpg
Carbon Monoxide Emissions
Merc 78.8 (g/kw/hr)
e-tec 84.9(g/kw/hr)
so despite evinrudes claims regarding emissions the numbers dont add up???
the merc and Yamaha also out performed in hole shot ,midrange and top end speed over the e-tec
also the merc 225 weight is 236kg e-tec 225 is 256kg yamaha 225 265kg
for every extra kg of weight means a nother liter of water to be displaced =more fuel .
The concept that e-tec is maintenance free as stated in owners handbook is scaree stuff for i know what happens with 3 years of running of any outboard ps the Spark plugs are not running the distance ether.
