witch doctor first build
Submitted by meglodon on Sun, 2012-01-29 16:37
I've had a go at building a witch doctor with the aim of hopefully attracting a few pelagics this season. Have christened it the Iron Duke as I think I got a bit carried away when building it. I hope I never see another peice of stainless steel for a long time as polishing the bits for this nearly drove me made

A witch doctor is a teaser that you run just behind the boat to attract pelagics like mackies and tuna etc. It darts about and creates flash that draw fish in because it resembles the Flashes you get from baitfish schools, or so the story go.
I have a Pakula and cant complain, apart from the few bites in it. Mackies and Billies seem to like the look of them.
Seen quite a few come up to the teaser to have a look, and avoiding the spread.

I spent about $70 making one
I spent about $70 making one but it didn't have the action like a real one. Kept surfacing etc it's all about the weight placement I think.

eBay ones that I have had
eBay ones that I have had anything to do with have not been weighted real well. Don't have the right shimmer and needed to be ran really short in the propwash to give it some action.

pakula
If you go with what Pakula reckons (THe guru) run them in or just out of your prop wash close to the boat, my boat is small so I keep it just on the edge of my propwash about 5-8m back.
I got a shock up at port gregory a few weeks ago when what I first thought was a jumbo tuna by the girth turned out to be a dolphin swimming alongside my teaser lol was a surprise for sure
next time I am out catching dolphins I will keep the teaser in mind ;)

Your homemade jobby looks
Your homemade jobby looks very good mate, Im real keen to get my hands on one but cant justify the 200 bucks unless its gonna last 10+ years.
Has anyone tried the ritcher version? They have stainless mirrors like "the iron duke" which are said to last longer and wear better.

I bought a witchdoctor copy
I bought a witchdoctor copy off Escapin Tackle on Ebay. Was pretty cheap and already has a couple of deep gouges from Spaniard hits and raised heaps of fish. Pakula goes on about his design like it's perfection. Come on, he made it when he was 16 years old, and it's not anything complicated. Yeah he stumbled across an idea that works but in reality there's nothing mysterious about it. Save yourself the grief and the money and get a copy. If Pakula hasn't made enough money from the original idea by now he hasn't been trying.
