which reel for Assassin Beach Master Heavy

Hi Guys,

I have an Assassin Beach Master Heavy overhead rod that I am looking to buy a reel for. To be used for surfcasting, mainly for larger species such as mulloway/sharks.

I am thinking of either trinidad A or a talica

which size reel is good for this, and also what line rating? (braid)

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Shimano torium 30 or trinidad 30

Can't go wrong with both mentioned reels. I'm using the torium 30 with 400m 50lb braid and 150m 50lb topshot. Just depend what you going to be targeting. You could downgrade to a 30lb braid with 30lb topshot.

I use a Trinidad DC 30 on mine which is the same size as the standard trinidad and torium . You will get 600yds of 50lb Berkley Whiplash and about 150m of 0.55 mono , there is nothing you wont stop with that combo off the beach.

nothing wrong with 30's

2 above are really good reels

you can add saltist BG 50 of saltiga to the mix

and well as the penn Torque (less well known)

I have the Talica 12, beautiful reel but I can't cast it as well as the saltist.

I run 50 lb braid backing with 150 m of .50 topshot (about 40lbs I think)

this is over kill for Mulloway, but perfect for sharks and rays.

Hi Guys,

THanks for that, one more question.... why do you put the mono topshot? do you get better casting with the braid on the top or the topshot of mono?

am going to go with the trinidad 30

Mono

Everything is easier with a mono topshot  , you will find it easier to cast and if you plan on doing some sliding mono is a must as the braid has no stretch and it can be really hard to get the slide moving down your line.

I have a Trinidad 30 and it's a great reel. I haven't had the opportunity to use it much recently but certainly ticks the boxes that I needed it for which was heavy beach fishing and oh jigging or trolling I got 600m of 50lb braid with 60 lb leader, you would easily get more with a finer braid but I didn't want to risk losing expensive braid with the birds nests whilst improving my casting

and don't forget

besides Vis22's comment, braid doesn't handle abrasive situations (ie rocks etc) very well. Mono does and the stretch in mono is handy with big fish that pull hard and change direction quickly.
