What size boat do you use to go out deep?
Submitted by Piggy on Mon, 2013-02-04 22:50
Hey Gents,
I am relitively new to boating and I wanted to know some opinions on the smallest boat people would take out wide (40 - 50m of water) obviously it will depend on weather, swell ect.
The reason why I ask is that I have just sold my 25ft trophy and I am looking at down sizing. I have looked at boats around the 6m mark and a little smaller... but to me they look a little too small to be taking out where I was going before.
probibly a random question, but I just wanted to know others opinions.
Cheers!

I have a 6 meter and
I have a 6 meter and regularly fish D bank and beyond.
I would do it in a 5.5 meter cuddy cab
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

A great read if you google it, not sure how much fishing was done but!
It was done quite a few years back , so he may not have had any of Ryans 1kg monster jigs or lights!
He didnt have great weather for alot of the trip , just drums of fuel and knackers like a camel!

a 6mtr would be fine if you picked your days. we fished the 90's(20nm out) regularly in a 6mtr .you just got to watch the weather as it can be a bit uncomfortable comming back in in rough conditions

4.7
4.7m quinnie I get out 25mile in reasonable weather. Could have gone further on good days IMO but I can usually get my fish within that range and if it's sloppy it's a slow trip back

Yeah I have a 5.5m and most
Yeah I have a 5.5m and most of my fishing is done 20nm+ away from the ramp.
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Up north
I have a 5.3 c/c and will taking it to the monte bellos around April or may that's around 43 nm from where I launch but have the luxury of islands to hide behind if the weather comes up
We feel nothing but a certain difficulty in continuing to stand

Generally speaking anything
Generally speaking anything less than 6m isnt suitable for 20+ km in average boating conditions. Being 1.5m swell and 10 knot easterly.
depends on weather.

We used to get our 4.2 tinny with a 25hp on the back out to direction bank 14-18 mile out fairly regularly but we caught most of our fish 6-9 ml so never needed to go that far. We had a 5.2m ally out 80+ kms a few times to
always looking for a new challenge!!

Depends where you are mate.
Depends where you are mate. At Tantas, you dont have to go very far at all to hit 50 metres. But at Dampier you have to travel 70kms.
Pick your weather, check more than one website, as they are often a bit different.

6m
A well designed 6m is fine for out wide, just use your common sense. A good way to get to know your boats capabilities is to go to Rotto with another boat in company and wait untill the breeze comes up and head for home. Most boats handle differently in a following sea, and it's best to get to know what your boat will do when you are in relative safety.

Safe vs comfortable. I've
Safe vs comfortable. I've just started venturing wider (30+km) and feel safe in the evo 550 (6m LOA). I however fish for the enjoyment of the day - and don't enjoy being bashed about in slop to catch fish, so I'll pick my days. If you don't mind the discomfort then you could safely head out wide in worse conditions.
