Tuna Rigging

Hi guys having my first SBT session in Portland soon just had few questions re: setup
running both braid and mono
for braid is bimini to snap swivel ok then attach leader or is bimini not necessary just tie direct to snap swivel?
for mono just uni knot to snap swivel then attach leader?
have got wind-ons but with the pre-rigged tuna skirts they dont come with wind on dacron to attach to bimini? or should i run braid to wind on to leader??
lastly for sight casting lures with spin gear would most people run bimini to small wind on or just tie albright or osmethign similar to a 1-2m mono leader?

Rigging...
First of all the windon is a different section of line to the leader thats on the tuna skirt. Its significantly lighter.
I suggest leave the braid outfit at home and stick with mono.
From the mono tie the binimi and attach the "wind-on" leader via catspaw join (loop to loop) THEN you can attach your clip swivel. The leader thats on your skirt will have a loop at one end and that can go onto the clip.
Have fun with the SBTs there. They're still getting them big there!!

You'll definely want a leader to your braid. Uni knot is fine for mono. When you say 'then attach leader' do you mean the leader thats pretied on the skirt/christmas tree?
Dont really need a wind on for SBTs. They are small after all. Ummm, but confused when you say the tuna skirts dont come with wind ons? They should be the skirt, a length of leader then the attachment point (a loop or a swivel). Then clip to that.
Defintely dont use a wind on for casting. Just GT on some leader. 2m is good.

The Portland SBTs in Vic
are not all small Hlokk. I think fish close to 150kg have been captured recently.

Gives you an idea of the size of the fish they are getting. There was one over 150Kg caught mid April.

Wish we got them like that here! Dont know why they dont at least get bigger ones round albany to esperence way. State record is only 10.8kg.
Was thinking for some reason it was a port somewhere in the southern part of the state. Not familiar with the names of all the towns in other states :p
For bigger tuna, I'd put a aussie plait then catspaw (or crossover) to windon. Aussie plait to cross connection works good if you have braid backing too. Can use a bimini, but not as smooth through the guides.

He did mention Portland, they get fish over 100kg there!
For a troller, mono is more typical; mono mainline to bimini or aussie plait, to WOL, to a quality clip like the Richter Clips, to this your lure trace, to your lure. I know Simon Rinaldi did well last season on the Richter Oscar Jnr.

For casting, how about braid to either a bimini to a gt, or an FG, then a mono trace to a swivel and a split ring and your popper/stickbait?

most school fish theyve been getting around 25kg max and have been a few barrels around 100kg hooked and lost!
few albies to 25kg too
i have a few pre rigged black magic lures they come with a length of leader and attachment point/loop as you mentioned hlokk. is this leader ample to connect to mainline or do you need another length somewhere inbetween (ie wind-on) as honsu mentioned??
i will still bring the braid outfit as its one of my favourites so would i be correct in rigging bimini in braid to wind-on to prerigged leader that comes with skirt?
i wasnt aware you can bimini with mono always thought it was a braid thing?

The attachment / point loop
you refer to is probably what is known as a thimble. To attach the line to a thimble you would normally use a snap swivel. The snap swivel could be at the end of the main line / a wind on leader or a double. Black Magic leaders are generally long and can be fished straight off the main line or double.

Depends how long the lure line is. If quite long as Alan said, then could be ok. I'd run a windon, just because if you get the tuna under the boat, you want to have several meters for abrasion if it goes under the boat and rubs the line against the hull. Gives you more line to leader it too if you need to.
Good idea to check the rigging on them too. I havent seen the black magic ones (I suspect their fine), but its worth at least checking the connections (or maybe just testing it). Honsu knows his stuff, so def worth listening to his ideas. If using the braid, certainly either use a windon or a topshot, or a really long leader. Keep in mind theres no stretch with braid and with thick leaders you wont get much stretch either.
Can do a bimini in mono (started there long before braid was around). You do less twists and you dont wind the 'winds' tight like on the braid version. Aussie plait goes through guides a lot better, but takes a lot longer to tie. For casting, just do a GT knot to your leader.

think thats where i was getting confused being long leaders wasnt sure if i still needed the wind-on or not but ill prob just connect the thimble straight to snap swivel from mainline

and i assume for sight casting lures/plastics at fish wind-on would only get in the way of casting so best to opt for a short tied on leader say 1-2m?
