Trolling setup

Hey Guys,

I just started with trolling, and i was wondering about the setup and I was hoping I could get some tips from you.

The last time we went out we just following setup: One big teaser at the starboard side bout 7meter behind the boat. Then 2 teasers on the inner side with small skirts behind them bout 15meters behind the boat. And on the outriggers we had one lure ( Halco laser pro shallow about 2meter deep)  and a big Richter skirt both about 30meters behind the boat.

All up we just hooked one tuna, but we saw them next to the boat so ther where more they just didnt wanne bite. We did changed a few skirts and lures (colors and sizes as well as deep going to shallow running) around but nothing really seems to work. So I was wondering if we have a wrong setup or if we did some other mistakes. The hook up was on the inner teaser with small skirt.

If anyone could give me some advise that would be great!

Thanks

For piddly perth tuna, run you skirt miles behind the boat, and forget the teasers.

Hi Till,

thanks for you advise.

The guy from blue water tried to sell me a 160Dollar teaser 2day, do you think thats a waste of money?

Small Profiles!

Aalfred,

there are quite a few factors to trolling of Perth Metro (if that's where you are). Firstly I would zig zag along contour lines at anywhere between 4 and 10 knots depoending on the day and current direction (usually 6.5/7knots). Stick to one style of lure either skirts or divers because they rarely effective at the same time. One good teaser should suffice. The lures to get good numbers are Richter Jelly babes and jnr tornados. Stick three of these out ( staggered) and a big one (soft grassy) way back just in case. The other factor to take into consideration is surface temp, find the thermal change and you'll find fish. Currently good numbers 3mile off Scarb to Mindarie. Hope this helps. Cam

That is a good place to start. Seeing the fish means you half way there. Should mention the humble twisty or small metal profiles work welll but take the treble off and use a single hook or an assist hook. Cam

p.s When you catch one cut it open and see what size bait they are eating. Match the hatch.

Consider high speed trolling

Tue, 2010-10-19 20:25

You won't catch fish where there are no fish and by trolling at higher speeds you will cover more ground.  The secret then is to keep the lure in the water.  Tuna have no problem at hitting a lure at 18 to 20 knots.  Run the lures long and lower than off the rod tip.

Hi Cam,

I will come in on Friday and stock up on the richter lures , and if i do decide to get a teaser i will go for the 160 oneSmile. And thanks for the tip with useing the same lure instead of mixing it up.I will give this a shot at the weekend. And what line class would you reccomend? I currently use 50- 80 pond.

Freebies!

Tue, 2010-10-19 20:32

I'll chuck a couple of freebies in to get you started. I troll 1 and 2kg for fun on the Southern Blues but a nice 8-10kg (mono) outfit will mean you land most things off Perth. Cam

Thanks

I will be there on friday. I think i might spool one of my reels with a bit lighter line. It should be a bit of a challange and not just reeling in!

High Speed Trolling

Tue, 2010-10-19 20:47

Hi Alan,

I thought 12knots would be the max. But it makes sense  there are fast fish. Another thing to try, Thanks

We have chucked out a witchdoctor for some flash last time and to bring the fish up as they appeared to be sitting deep. I think teasers are a good idea but certainly not a necessity IMO, if you plan on trolling a bit this summer then why not pick one up!
