Transom tie downs?

 Hey all

Looking for some advice on transom tie down straps for the new tub (in place of having to use the usual ratchet strap over the back end). I have a couple of lugs welded under the transom for them, just interested in the requirements/ legalities of using them in place of the standard strap over the gunnels set up)

Particularly:

- are they actually legal/ meet tie down restraint requirements for road use?

- if they are a legal alternative, what sort of rating would I need for a 7.5m ally boat weighing about 2.2T (hull alone) when fully loaded?

- anyone know of decent ones that would be suitable? most of the ones besides the boat buckle G2s  look way underrated etc and even then Im not sure if they are heavy enough for my boat at 2500lb?

At a guess Id think they would need to meet the usual road restraint requirements (80% forward, 50% sideways and back, 25% up) but if so:

- is this the weight of the hull/ load or the inclusive of the trailer as well?

- is this seperate to/ in addition to the front chain/ turnbuckles rating or does the combined rating of the two work? Which on second thoughts probably is irrelivant anyway as if its the 80% forward motion that the tie downs would be useful for and the hull/ cargo weighs 2.2T I would need 1.76T rear rating so the I would need near to 5000lb of restraint

- If thats true, would the G2s, rated at 2500 be OK- 2 of them equalling 5000lb, or is it combined for them as well?

... hence my confusion on it all :)

cheers in advance

Big assed ratchet straps

Sun, 2022-08-28 20:25

My boat comes in at 4.5t fully loaded minus the trailer. Because she's glass I run two x 2500kg ratchet straps across her gunnels on the rear end from one side of the trailer to the other using the rear bollards as stop points. The usual winch strap and turn buckle safety chain on the front plus two smaller ratchets in an x style from the front cleats to the trailer. Didn't budge at all from C'von to Cairns on some of the shittiest roads in the country. Don't skimp on your pride and joy.

Yep, what I currently run (

Yep, what I currently run ( the usual HD ratchet stap over the back end and one at the front for longer trips) but am really keen on knowing if a couple of trailer to underneight the transom is legal/ works

Main reason is its fairly annoying to have to climb over the strap when getting into/ out of the boat when she is parked up and pain in the butt putting it on/ taking it off etc

Also cause Im OCD the rubbing on paintwork etc even though I use a couple of padded sleeves where it comes in contact with the hull at the bottom of the chine/ over the gunnels

Sounds fair.

As long as the load is adequately restrained I can't see any reason why you can't do what you want to. Maybe some chains with turnbuckles?. Enjoy the new rig!.

Load Restraints guide

It doesn't matter where you use the restraints in most cases.

As long as you meet the requirements of the guide.

80% forward, 50% sideways and 20% down of the load weight (Boat only).

You can combine 2 load straints for total restraint load but best to go well over in real world terms.

Bunks

Mon, 2022-09-05 16:23

Something to be aware of, if your boat has a bit of clearance between the hull and the bunks you should be extra careful on how much you pull it down. Mate had the engineering shop in Carnarvon and spent a lot of time welding cracks in ali hulls where they had pulled the straps down  tight resulting in cracks along where the bunks touched. After all, the bunks are only there to hold the hull upright not support its weight, the keel rollers are there for that

My new boat and trailer is

Mon, 2022-09-05 17:30

My new boat and trailer is coming with the boat buckle's at the rear, the builder says they are legal and a boat has to have three points of restraint. I also work with a fleet of log trucks and we use a total of 8 ratchet straps to restrain a 55 tonne pay load.
