stradic 5000 or 6000

Just curious to know peoples opinions on which reel I would be better off with, after reading a few posts iv pretty much settled on a new stradic fj but not sure which size will mostly be used for taylor from the beach and rocks but would like it to still have the guts to land a mulloway or pinky should I ever be so lucky

I'd say

go the 6000 or 8000 (same body size just 8000 has a bigger spool).

The 5000 is a beefed up 4000 with a bigger spool and power knob.

Go the 5000

Almost the all round size.  I've used my 5000 Stradic for everything from squiding, throwing poppers & stick baits off the beach and rocks to jigging up Sambos and pinkies.  Next size up IMO is too big.

5000 is big enough most the time to get a mully or pinky - its the ideal size for big (and small) tailor. BUT, as Miller said, the 6000/8000 would be better for set baits for mullies n the like.

Can see there's going to be a few opinions on this one... But I've got a 5000fj that has managed sambos from the boat no problem and would be perfect for flicking lures out or bait casting, IMO it wouldn't have a problem with a mulla or pinky...

however, like a couple of the guys have said, if you were leaving a set bait out and wanted the extra line capacity (thinking ray or small shark by-catch) then it may be worth looking at the 6000...

I know when I bought mine I found it hard to believe that this little 5000 reel (in comparison to my older penn) had more stopping power and would be as good as everyone had said.

If you already have a rod I'd take it in and put a 5000 and 6000 on it just see which one you think 'feels' right... Your gonna have a few differing opinions but I don't think your going to go wrong with either

 Had the same dilemma

Sun, 2013-05-12 11:34

Had the same dilemma yesterday Ben. Tackleworld down in Falcon has a big Shimano sale on this weekend. I was tossing up which way to go too, but the choice got made for me as they had sold out of the 5000. So 6000 it is. I got it spooled with 300 yards of 30 lb. with a bit of mono on the bottom.

Can't wait to test it out!!

cheers

Chris

Sun, 2013-05-12 13:22

get 300m exactly of pe2 on the 5000, and thats with a wrap of backing to cover the base of the spool. Never go by the suggested line capacities anyway!

I've got a 5000 with 30lb

Sun, 2013-05-12 21:17

I've got a 5000 with 30lb line on the 5000 spool and a spare 4000 spool with 20lb and last time we went out was using the 4000 spool (20lb) and managed a decent sized wobby.

The 5000fj is a serious little reel, nice and light and can mix it with the best. U won't look back.

i use  the 5000 for jigging

Sun, 2013-05-12 22:49

i use  the 5000 for jigging and landed big pinks recently at monkia mia.  i dont really cast a lot of lures around with it, but i would be asking the question about differences in retrieval rates?  will the bigger reel be better for retrieving lures at speed?? i dont know.

Both 5000 and 6000 are great...

Mon, 2013-05-13 10:17

Either would be fine..6000 isn't too heavy, light and easy to use. However, the 5000 will do everything you want, the 6000 just adds a bit of insurance...
