squidlips
Hey hobie. Have done a lot of squiding this year and this is what i have sussed out fishing for squid off hillarys so far..
Have to buy good squid jigs....you will catch the odd one on the cheaps ones, but the $22 i have has caught ten fold over the cheaper ones i have.
If its a calm day i wont put any weight on the squid jig to get it down, as i found the squid tend to not be scared as much of coming right up off the bottom chasing them. The less weight the better, but when its windy you have to get some weight on, to get your jig right down near the weed..were there sheltering themselves.
Any weed on the jig, you wont catch shit. These days i mainly use the squid spikes that you can put a fish on. Since i have done that, im catching twice the amount i used to. I have just been using small whiting..squid cant resist them!
One last thing...i have lost heaps of squid when bringing them up with my big orange drift anchor out..for some reason..it scares the shit out of them....
IM very keen to hear what other people have to say!

No drift anchors!!
Just set yourself up to drift with the current over a good patch of ground (weed/sand patches). Never anchor up and squid, you have to cover ground.
Yo-zuri jigs for me - bright colours on sunny days, dull colours on over-cast days. Not a hard and fast rule, but 75% of the time it works everytime. Having said that, in Cockburn Sound at least my "Boy Blue" lure usually goes in first drop and rarely disappoints. The jig size (and weight) will depend on the strength of the current - the stronger it is, the heavier you go.
And as Wade said as soon as you get weed on your jig pull it in as you wont catch a squid on it. What people haven't mentioned is line - given a squids incredible eyesight I believe its very important. I use either playpus pink (now called lo-stretch) or Yo-zuri hybrid (smoke). I have found both work well and have easily outfished mates who used any old line (braid/nylon) when fishing side by side.
Fishing it is as simple as a short sharp tug, then let it fall, short sharp tug, let it fall etc etc. or you can "double tug" it to vary it up. Its a personal preference but I prefer using handlines to rods - I feel I have better contact with the jig and the action I can impart is better. And tie one off to your boat/kayak just above the weed level and allow the natural up and down movement of the boat/kayak to impart action on the jig - you'll be surprised at how many you pick up that way, just be sure to keep an eye on it!
Lastly use a landing net to "boat" them. Leave them in the water trapped in the net until you can grab them just above the eyes and then squeeze the crap out of them until all the water comes out then quickly throw it into an esky or whatever you have (make sure it has a lid).
Cant think of much else - hope that helps.

also I have been using a drift anchor so might give that a miss in future to see how catch rates compare.
Last weekend with Boofhead and my mrs on board the Yamashita jig outfished everything else, so it seems the higher priced jigs arent just to catch the fisho's, so went out and bought a couple more in different colours today.

as per my post
I use only platypus pink or yo-zuri hybrid, thus no leader.

Thanks for all the info,
Thanks for all the info, great stuff!
I use braid on all my reels so that is why I need to use a leader, at the moment I'm using 6lb flourocarbon but maybe lighter might be better.

I was a keen squidder until
I was a keen squidder until the Snapper started running hot, i could get my limit in a couple hours on $3 BCF lures, the smaller the lure the better for me 2.5 etc
Best times for me after 4pm and before 9 am, some folks say when you catch one leave it tethered in the water(on the lure) and it will attract more around, i have never tried this,,
While the cheapos work well when they are running hot,, the expensive ones sit in the water better (more level)and the swivels work better and will outfish the cheapos on the quiet days,,,,
The Top Guns are reportly moveing away from your pinks, blue, green colours and now are going for the natural coloured ones that look the same colour as a prawn, which makes a lot of sense when you think about it.
I would not go to light a line, as you can lose the lure in the weed.
I agree handlines are great for squid, also if you are out at night shine a light on the water and they will come up to the light. (suspend a light on the side) or use a special underwater light on a pole.(waterproof torch on a rope off jettys)
and if you ever encounter very shy squid just let the jig fall to the bottom and they will go down and grab it on the way down or while its on the bottom (good idea if you are moored),,15-20 seconds on the bottoms usually enough time, pull the line and 9 times out of 10 you will catch it.

A couple of queries
Why do you squeeze the water out of the body and how do avoid getting inked?

Once you squeeze them
They cant ink you. They ink out of the same hole you squeeze the water out of.
The easiest way I have found is to bring them to the boat, get a landing net under them as quickly as you can and then relax your line tension (so they aren't "pointing at you" and the ink will stay in the water and not be squirted at you).
Let em ink out a bit, then grab em, squeeze em hard to squirt out the water and in one quick motion throw them in the esky and shut the lid. The ice will send them to sleep, but be aware they will continue to ink in your esky until they snooze - so dont use an esky you dont want ink in......

Diji showed me how to
Diji showed me how to bringthem in really slowly - they're usually out of ink, and then to lie them down carefully, the right way up - they don't squirt then.

when diji lies the squid
when diji lies the squid down he actually whistles very softly and then starts humming to them as he takes the jig out.... this way it seems to calm the squid and take a fancy to him........ about the same thing he did to Al yesterday out in the boat....... pmsl
cheers Jes
