Squid on soft plastics

Went out for landbased flick in Saftey Bay yesterday morning and was surprised to land a nice sized squid with a soft plastic. Is this common?? Anyone else caught a squid without a jig or prong?

I was followed in again before changing to a jig and getting another 2.

Also took home a few herring for the BBQ and let a heap go. Halco twistie did most of the damage.

What size do people consider a herring to a "bull herring"?? Biggest went 25.5cm and smallest 23cm. All seem to be around that same size.

A work mate got squid on a McDonnalds straw once.

We get the Macca straws and cut them into quarters. Then feed onto a 1/0 which is attached to line via a small swivel.
Works a teat on the Hezzas, very good low fouling troll rig. Kids love it. Run at a speed where it flutters on surface.
Squid capture has been the best, but have got Tailor and plenty of Herring.

Edit... 25cm is a bull Hezza in my book. Well done. I love fishing the area just south of Penguin Caffe. Great snorkel sport too.

I've caught squid on gang

Wed, 2015-04-01 13:09

I've caught squid (and cuttlefish) on gang hooked mulies, and also once on a Triho minnow. Never on a plastic, so well done.

By the way, I ran into something called a Shimano squid minnow, which is a bibbed/diving minnow painted a bit like a prawn, with a squid jag at the rear end in stead of a regular hook.  I have two colours on order and am keen to give them a try.  Can post a link if anybody is interested.

When the Salmon went deep my mate started jigging a twisty, caught onto some 'sea weed' and pulled up a squid.

Cheers guys. Was strange when I hooked it, felt like dead weight but then had a run like a squid and I thought "surely not" haha.

I've heard about herring liking the straws so will have to give that a go, also got a small surface popper I want to try on them. The way they were the other day they would take just about anything!!

Might have a look at that minnow Bushbever sounds interesting!

I lived across the road from Penguin Island Opsrey lots of good land based options around there

Penguin Island

Hey Glen - do you mind letting me know whereabouts you fish in that area?  Would it be around the Penguin Island office area?  I would like to take my kids down there for a fish in the morning, let them catch herring and even squid if they are around.  Thanks in advance.

Fished the patchy weed beds

Thu, 2015-04-02 18:39

Fished the patchy weed beds around the corner from PI sand bar (south). Also fished it in the morning.

You should have no problem with a heap of herring, has been plenty around the safety bay / shoalwater area. I threw in a small amount of burrley to get them going and they didn't stop.

Hope you and the kids have a good one
